Most of the Sikh people name their kids from a word or something from daily hukamnama (Not sure how this works)

Is the just superstition ?

I mean what if someone wants to name their kid with some other name from Gurbani other than the first word of hukamnama ?

It's not a superstion. There are three type of Sanskars in Sikh rehet maryada. 1.Janam sanskar which you are mentioning. 2.Anand sanskar during marriarge you must be knowing that. 3.mritak sankar at the time of death.

Why not let Guruji name your child? What a blessing! Guruji knows the child's destiny in this incarnation. It does not have to be the first word of the hukamnama. It does not even have to be a name starting with the first letter of that word. That hukamnama is for the child. Read it. Meditate on it. Meditate on the new soul who has just arrived. The mother understands because she can feel the soul of the child. Understand the meaning of the hukamnama and how it relates to the soul of the child. Then choose carefully from within the hukamnama through your own understanding.

The problem with "baby names" is that they do not vibrate the soul of the child, but only reflect some idea of the family based on some mental concept or on the name of an ancestor.

Names are powerful! Let the child's name align with the child's being. That is why we listen to Guruji and allow the name to reveal itself.
