Where I live the Sikhs have middle name Singh and Kaur. I know other places a lot of people get rid of their surname altogether for equality purposes and make their last name Singh and Kaur. I am wondering what happens with the kids? I have seen for example some girls have the last name Singh then because their dad's last name is Singh. I'm find this a bit confusing... is there a way of getting around that issue?

Well, the kids, just like the parents, would be Singh or Kaur according to their gender. When surnames are dropped, they are dropped at that point in the lineage. Yes, I know some people have added "Singh" as a surname e.g., Harjot Kaur Singh, but that just comes from not thinking it through.
