Am I A Good Sikh?

I am a Sikh aged 18 currently at Univerity. I don't drink, smoke, take drugs. I have however cut hair. On recent social gatherings with friends i have noticed a large majority of pagwala drinking and smoking.

Am I a good sikh if I recite Japji sahib and rehras daily but have cut hair, or are pagwala better sikhs even if they take intoxicants.

Please help shed some light on this topic

I would say your better than those paghwala sardars who are sikh just for namesake.

Sat Nam. Whether you are a "good Sikh" or not is for you yourself to feel and judge. We can observe others doing things we know we would not do, but as a Sikh, you are responsible to your own conscience and to your Guru. Obviously drinking and smoking are neither acceptable nor healthy! Cutting hair is insulting God. You need to make your own decisions, and focus on becoming the best that you can possibly be, not matter what other people do. Blessings, SP

There is no such thing as a "good Sikh" or a "bad Sikh." Either one is a Sikh of the Guru or one is not. It's that simple. Dressing to look like what you think a Sikh should look like does not make you a Sikh. Following rules and regulations does not make you a Sikh. Either you are, or you're not. It's not a persona nor a set of rules. It is within the heart, mind and soul of the individual. That is between the Guru and the Sikh. The Guru chooses his Sikh. The Sikh does not choose his Guru.

There is no side to this, but you should wish to take amrit, not saying you are bad, but try to always improve yourself, not from outside, but inside as well, and if you feel that growing or cutting your hairs seems right to you doesn't have negative aspects, good for you doing Japji I am proud of you as a Sikh

Hi,

My brother in law is a sikh...drinks beer day and night, smokes alot almost every hour, gives his baby whisky to drink and enjoys to see his few months old kid feel drunk and doze off. Can you do something for such a nasty person? When i told him not to do that, he beat me up as well. I myself being from a sikh family have started to hate my religion because of him. Compared to him , dudes you are a very very good Sikh.

Hey don't make the mistake of hating your religion just because of the actions of someone who does not even have anything to do with our religion. Please don't make the mistake of associating the sikh religion with this person who, maybe 'looks' like a sikh outwardly but is NOT one.

The sikh religion is a religion of complete surrender and love for God. If you will read the bani for yourself, then you will see what it is really about...

waheguru ji ka khalsa waheguru ji ki fate

so what if you cut hair.

ok consider a person who doesn't cut hair but smokes, drinks and takes drugs, wouldnt that be an insult to god.

and here it is you, who cuts hair but doesnt smoke, drink or take drugs, how will you insult god that way.

if your good from inside you dont need to show it on the outside by for example keeping hair.

now would you consider yourself a bad sikh or a sikh who smokes drinks or takes drugs

THE CHOICE IS YOURS.......

I really appreciate that you don't drink and smoke. But Guru Sahib ask us to love yourself and then take care of your society and make as such that others learn from you. When a doctor give you some medicine for your sake, are you questioning him. Not at all. Then why we are questioning on our Guru Sahib. Sabut Surat Sikh with rehat Mariada are the important keys in sikhism. Don't bother about the sikhs of Raval pindi, take the examples of others true sikhs from our history. We remberered them today also because they lives in rehat marida and even sacrifices their lives. Take example of Bhai Taru Singh ji, His age was only 24 when he sacrificed his life. Turban is TAJ for every sikh. Hope you understand.
