2013-05-22 16:02:21 -0500 answered a question learn to read and speak punjabi

Like in any language, you need to learn the alphabet before you can carry on with reading and/or writing.

Here is a great resource sheet, which was created by sikhnet and has helped me personally.

Once you have learn the letters, then you can learn the vowels, using the same sheet.

2013-05-17 15:48:18 -0500 answered a question New Believer in Sikhism (Ex Muslim)

You can easily practice sikhism, without your family knowing because the sikh code of conduct is fairly short and simple. this code is known as "Rehat Maryada".

Here is a link: http://www.gurunanakdarbar.net/sikhrehatmaryada.pdf

Granted that you will not be able to follow all of the rules, without letting your family know, but many of the rules are simple and an be accomplished without your family finding out. For example you could do meditation on the Lords name "waheguru" in your mind, and nobody except you and God would know.

I would suggest that you tallk to Guruka Singh, who also converted his faith into sikhism.

P.S. I would recommend you to tell your family, even though they may be mad at you they can't kill you. They will get over it.

2013-05-14 10:50:09 -0500 answered a question Response to 1984

This is a very difficult question for me to answer.

To start Lets look at what "justice" means

Definition:

(1) : the principle or ideal of just dealing or right action (2) : conformity to this principle or ideal : righteousness

But, what is a right action against such a crime

  • Revenge ??? (how would this help bring peace)

  • Create a document for peace/rights in India ??? (The indian government is not willing to negotiate these kinds of matters openly, they don't take the blame for the murders of thousands of sikh people)

  • Raising awareness ??? (awareness, alone won't make a difference)

In the end, no matter what we do, we will never be able to bring back those lives which have been lost during the genocide.

We must establish human rights in india to prevent anything like this to ever happen again, but convincing the government to create such a document will takes years of hard work from many persuasive individuals.

All that we can do is reflect on the lives which were lost and pray that it never happens again.

2013-05-14 09:31:51 -0500 asked a question Punjabi in google translate

Waheguru Ji Ka Khalsa Waheguru Ji Ke Fateh

This post isn't about a question which i have, its about an idea that i wish to bring to the sikh community. Since my punjabi isn't very good, i have a request to any bilingual sikh who can speak both punjabi and English. I want to get punjabi onto google translate, to make it available to anybody. I have done some research about this, and i have found that the public can help include more languages (like punjabi) into google translates system. you can do this by going to this link :

https://translate.google.com/toolkit/list?hl=en&ut=e#translations/active

Once your there...

  1. Login (you can login with your sikhnet email adress and password)
  2. press the red upload button.
  3. choose a file from your computer
  4. upload the file
  5. name the file
  6. select your language (either punjabi or gurmukhi punjabi)
  7. click upload for translation
  8. edit the file so that it is now in 100% punjabi or gurmukhi punjabi
  9. download the file or publish

for more instructions watch this video... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C7W2NJFdoIg

It would be amazing to see bilingual sikhs working together to bring our language into google translate. Sikh net has brought so many resources to us, Now lets help bring one to them.

Thank you for your help.

There are so many characteristics in sikhi which impress me to stay as a sikh. You could go on writing thousands of characteristics. Its not something which you can briefly describe. I will try to describe some of them here in my answer.

  1. Briefly describe those great things in Sikhi that impress you to stay as a Sikh.
  • Equality; no cast systems or differences between male/female
  • Gurdwaras available to all
  • Sri Guru Granth Sahib written by the gurus, not priests
  • etc.
  1. What great qualities in the teachings of the Sikh Gurus inspire you to be their followers?

Qualities:

  • Peaceful
  • Honest
  • Forgiving
  • Great teachers

Teachings:

  • Equality
  • three basic rules to live by: naam japna, Wand chhakana and Kirt Karna
  • God judges man by actions, not casts
  • Don't escape from problems, face them!
  • opposed idol worship and many rituals
  • spiritual education is very important

3.What achievements of the Gursikhs impress you the most and make you want to be like them?

I don't judge sikhs by what they have accomplished but by what what they can do.

  • Baba Deep Singh; his courage
  • Harbhajan Singh Yogi; spreading of his knowledge
  • Beant Singh; determination and courage
  • Satwant Singh; determination and courage
  • Banda Singh Bahadur; willingness and courage

They all are important sikhs in sikh history.

Note: Many Gursikhs gained achievements that weren't reconized.

I hope this answered your very difficult question.

2013-01-30 10:14:45 -0500 answered a question Friend passed away

I am not sure about a specific prayer, but I know that you can make a request (ardaas) to God. If this request is made from your heart, the request (Ardaas) will come true. Believe me when I say this. When i was little I had seizures (life threatening) and all my family did was repeat (jaap) Gods name (Waheguru) and eventually I became perfectly better. That is why i am here or else i would have been dead. It is God who listened to the requests of my family and I. It was God who had saved me from death.

As for your second question. I am not God so I can't tell you if she will have to go through all of the lifeforms, before returning to be a human. In Sikhism thats what we believe. I believe that God is fair when he chooses to make a sikh or not. It is all the same. No culture or cast is greater than the rest. So does it matter what cast or culture your born to? I agree in Sikhism we obtain things which no other cast has, but its how we use these gifts in our lifes thats makes it worth being a sikh.

Being sad about this matter is senseless, life continues to go on, whether she is here or not. Just believe that she is in a better place and don't worry about her. Her path was written before she was alive, and she now must follow it. There is nothing we can do.

I don't know the actually reason for the Palki Sahib. I did a little bit of research and i found that it shows the importance of the Sri Guru Granth Sahib. But then again it isn't used in all Gurdwaras. I am sorry that i couldn't specifically answer your question, but at least I tried.

I don't know of a specific prayer, but I know that if you make a request(Ardaas) to Guru Har Krishan Sahib Ji, He will heal you or in this case your mother. I used to have seizures when i was little and at the time all that my family did was that they repeated Gods name (Waheguru) and now I am perfectly better. You shouldn't worry about your mother she will get better. Just believe in God and repeat (jaap) Gods name.

2013-01-29 11:42:48 -0500 answered a question lack of my dad's love ?

Please don't post your questions twice. An answer will come to your first post with time. Just be patient.

I feel really sorry for you, but we are not here to judge people or there actions. Your father may have had a reason for this, but you should not assume that he does not love you. Money and items aren't everything.Whatever God wanted to happen has happened and can't be changed. There is no use of thinking or worrying about this matter, it will not change your fathers actions.

Besides even if your father didn't love you, God has always been there with you and has always been giving you love and worldly pleasures. As long as you remember him and listen to him you will be fine.

2013-01-29 11:23:37 -0500 answered a question should i carry with the idea of running a khalsa youth website?

I agree with you, maintaining a website can be hard (I run a website too). Things like school, work and at times your social life can interfere with the time that you have to update your site.Instead of shutting down the website, I would recommend that you put it aside for now and update it maybe once a month. This would let go of all of the pressure which is on you at the moment. As for hiring someone to maintain your website. This would increase the amount of work you have because you would constantly have to check up on the site to make sure that it is running the way you want it too. I am not here to judge you, but if you won't be able to offer the public with anything new/interesting than there isn't a benefit of keeping this site.

I may be able to help you with the site (contact: [email protected]) but don't rely on my help as a definite option.

2013-01-29 11:05:04 -0500 answered a question how to thank god ??

God has done infinite things for us. We can't thank him for all that he has done, but we can listen to him. By reciting the prayers you can learn many teachings of the Gurus. Applying these teachings into your daily life will not only make you a better person, but in a way thank God.

*You can start by...

  • Helping others
  • Giving knowledge to others
  • Meditating (on Gods name; waheguru)
  • Overall being nice

*Remember that you should slowly incorporate these things into your life, don't take all of these actions into your life at once(they will overwhelm you).

2013-01-28 11:41:39 -0500 answered a question confused about my career

I believe that nobody is answering your question. You wanted to know what careers should you do instead of this job. In order to receive feedback you may want to give a basic idea about your education and interests to let us (the community)successfully find a career that suits you and doesn't require you to do things that are against sikhi.

remember, "soche soch na hovai je sochi lakh vaar."

Don't worry about this matter. Waheguru will give you the answer to this problem.

I was wondering if your Sikh-net team could create a feature which would translate this great website into Punjabi, so that many Sikhs who can't read English will be able to use this great website?
