Does God protect us?

My question is, does God protect us? We hear the story of Guru Nanak Dev Ji when he was little and the snake came to give him shade from the hot sun and we are told that God watches over us like that. When we are saved from a crisis in our lives we say God protected us, when something "bad" happens to someone, we say He delivered justice for something that person did. But I have a friend who recently said "God doesn't protect us or harm us, He is just there with us through all of this." I feel like i told myself God is my protector to feel safe, but when that sense of safety was broken by something happening in my life, i wasn't able to regain it by saying God is going to protect me from this happening again because it already happened once. I find myself confused.
