Can a Sikh girl have a boyfriend

Hi. I asked this one Sikh girl if she would be my girlfriend (I'm Indian and she is too )She said oh my gosh I'll tell you to tomorrow. She then pulled me aside the next day and said I'm sorry I can't date you. My parents won't let me date and my brothers will find out and maybe try to beat you up. Then she said maybe if my parents let me date then probably I would agree. So then I got her a birthday present. She rejected that too and I think she went to the bathroom to cry or something. Now what do I do ? I really like her and she said dating is against her religion. Is that true ? Because all her other punjabi Sikh friends have boyfriends. She is Sikh Punjabi. My family is half Hindu and half Christian Marathi.
