Loving and caring is different from attachment. Attachment is when you are unable to give something up. When that person or thing has power over you. The alcoholic is attached to the bottle and the lover is attached to the beloved. That is why romantic love evolves into deeper love - prem. That is why you attach yourself only to the Guru. That is the only attachment that will carry you across this world ocean. So yes, love and care for your family but do not bind yourself to them.

The poet William Blake summed it up nicely:

"He who binds to himself a joy does the winged life destroy; But he who kisses the joy as it flies lives in eternity's sun rise."
