Actually, the Guru's meaning refers to the body's inner heat. Not a fever, but heat naturally produced within the body. "Jap Tap Sanjam houmai maar: Jap, Tap and Sanjam come by subduing the ego" (Ang 1343) Jap we all know: chanting of God's Name. Tap means inner heat. When one opens the tenth gate (dasam duar) and energy flows freely in the body a heat is felt in the spine. That inner heat is a real heat. That is tap, the heat produced by spiritual discipline. Sanjam is that discipline, self-containment and regular practice of sadhana.
