One who lives alone in the midst of it all! In that single-minded focus on Naam, each of us lives alone. The lotus flower is attached to the earth by it's long root which is set in the mud while the flower floats serenely on the surface of the water. Guru Nanak Dev Ji is describing a state of mind. In married life we attain that same state of Oneness in relation to Oneness. That is the point of married life (per the Lavan.)

"The lotus flower floats untouched upon the surface of the water, and the duck swims through the stream; with one’s consciousness focused on the Word of the Shabd, one crosses over the terrifying world-ocean. O Nanak, chant the Naam, the Name of the Lord. One who lives alone, as a hermit, enshring the One Lord in his mind, remaining unaffected by hope in the midst of hope, sees and inspires others to see the inaccessible, unfathomable Lord. Nanak is his slave." (Ang 938)
