Turning feet towards mecca

I hope I am not offensive in asking this question, i am just trying to understand. When Guru Nanak went to Mecca, he fell asleep under the tree and people got mad that his feet were turned to Mecca, so Guru Ji asked them to turn his feet to the side that God is not present, which isn't possible, and they then saw Mecca in every direction which his feet were turned. I am wondering then, what the difference is between the Muslims wanting Guru Ji to respect their holy location by not turning his feet in that direction versus our not asking people to turn their feet towards the Guru Granth Sahib Ji. Please forgive my ignorance, maybe i didn't understand the sakhi correctly, but that's how i've always heard it.
