Here's what I did... I went to my local police HQ and talked to the officer in charge. We sat down together and talked about Sikhi, our lifestyle and beliefs. I answered all his questions. He asked me if I would be willing to make a training video to be used for local and state police training with regard to different cultures and ethnicities. I agreed and we set a time. That evening I got to explain panj kakkar clearly on video. The police have asked sometimes to see my kirpan (which I do not wear in plain view) and they are very respectful and positive because they already know what it is.

Now school is a different situation, but it's the same path. I suggest making an appointment with the chancellor or whoever is in charge to discuss bana on campus. You may have to carry a smaller kirpan, but I suspect there is a graceful solution to this in which all parties feel included.
