2013-11-12 23:47:26 -0500 asked a question Can sikhs eat meat

Waheguru Ji Ka Khalsa, Waheguru Ji Ki Fateh

A few days ago me and my friend had a discussion on if sikhs could eat meat. I am not sure about this so can someone please explain.

The first shabad that I found when looking for an answer was as follows:

First Mehl:

The fools argue about flesh and meat, but they know nothing about meditation and spiritual wisdom.

What is called meat, and what is called green vegetables? What leads to sin?

It was the habit of the gods to kill the rhinoceros, and make a feast of the burnt offering.

Those who renounce meat, and hold their noses when sitting near it, devour men at night.

They practice hypocrisy, and make a show before other people, but they do not understand anything about meditation or spiritual wisdom.

O Nanak, what can be said to the blind people? They cannot answer, or even understand what is said.

They alone are blind, who act blindly. They have no eyes in their hearts.

They are produced from the blood of their mothers and fathers, but they do not eat fish or meat.

If anyone could help explain this it would really help.

There is a huge debate on this topic and I am stuck in the middle of it and am completely confused.

Any opinions and advice will be very much appreciated.

2013-11-09 08:38:59 -0500 asked a question Depression due to lack of concentration

Waheguru Ji Ka Khalsa, Waheguru Ji Ki Fateh

I notice that when I an doing path it seems as though it is very hard to concentrate. When I am able to concentrate on my prayers I feel happy, calm and other good feelings.

For example : When I am able to focus while doing Guru Gobind Singh's Chaupai Sahib I feel a lot of bravery and energy.

However, when I get disturbed by other thoughts while doing my prayers then I feel sad and depressed. It also sometimes ruins my day.

I dunno if any of you experience this but please let me know. I also dunno if this occurrence is a good or bad sign.

Also I would really appreciate it if you could share your opinions with me on this matter.

Thank You

Whaheguru Ji Ka Khalsa, Waheguru Ji Ki Fateh

ki-aa ujoo paak kee-aa muhu Dho-i-aa ki-aa maseet sir laa-i-aa. What good are your purifications? Why do you bother to wash your face? And why do you bother to bow your head in the mosque?

If we look at the next line of the sahabad, Bhagat Kabeer Ji gives us a soloution and explanation to the previous line.

ja-o dil meh kapat nivaaj gujaarahu ki-aa haj kaabai jaa-i-aa. ||3|| Your heart is full of hypocrisy; what good are your prayers or your pilgrimage to Mecca?

So in conclusion in order to purify ourselves we must first give up hypocrisy.

If I have made any mistakes in interpretation of this shabad, then please correct me.

Hope this helps you Sardar Ji.

2013-11-06 08:42:00 -0500 asked a question Confused about whether I must keep my hair

Waheguru Ji Ka Khalsa, Waheguru Ji Ki Fateh

I am a teenage sikh. I have been told by almost all my family members that it is not a must to keep my hair long. Up till this point in life my family members have made me cut my hair. When I was younger my family members never told me that sikhs keep their hair uncut. I only found out a year ago that sikhs have to keep their hair.

Ever since I have tried to keep my hair. But whenever my family members think that my hair or beard has grown too long they take me to a nearby barber shop and make me cut my hair and shave my beard.

So I started to ask them why they continuously kept making me cut my hair. They told me several reasons such as :

You need to look need neat and presentable It is very hard to maintain long hair It is very hard to tie a turban I will not get into a good school if I keep my hair and beard I need to shave my beard for things such as renewal of my passport.

Then a few days ago I sat down to discuss this matter with my grand uncle. Since he was the oldest in our family I thought he would be able to help me. I asked him why all the members in my family had been cutting their hair and why they were making me cut my hair. This is because I found out that Guru Gobind Singh Ji ordered us to keep our hair uncut and our beards unshaven.

What he said in response made me even more confused. He told me that Guru Nanak Dev Ji did not say that we could not cut our hair. I am not saying that my family members are bad. They have given me a very comfortable life and have cared for me a lot. But this may be one of the few times when I disagree with their decision.

Sorry for being so long. I am just a young sikh who wants to keep his hair and beard. I am inexperienced and I need some help. I have cried many times at night wondering what should I do. I did not want to cut my hair. I do not know whether Guruji will forgive me if I keep my hair and beard henceforth. Please help me out here.

Any opinions and advice will be very much appreciated.

2013-11-06 00:27:20 -0500 answered a question Waheguru ji help

Waheguru Ji Ka Khalsa, Waheguru Ji Ki Fateh

Waheguru Ji always listens and helps his devotees. My friend once let me read a book on the life story of Guru Nanak Dev Ji. There is one part in that story which relates to your situation.

The story is about 2 close friends that lived in the same neighborhood. They were both devotees of Guru Nanak. So one day they both decided to pay homage to Guru Nanak. Along the first devotee was lured by a prostitute. The second devotee paid homage to Guru Nanak with full devotion.

The next day, the first devotee found a gold coin at his doorstep. The second devotee who went to pay homage to Guru Nanak again was pricked by a thorn along the way. So when the second devotee met Guru Nanak, he asked him why this was happening.

Guru Nanak replied "Based on his past actions your friend was destined to get a treasure as a reward. But due to his bad actions in this life his reward has been reduced to a single gold coin. However based on your past actions you were destined to be hanged as a punishment. But you have reformed completely so your punishment has been reduced to a mere prick of a thorn." Hearing this the second devotee felt very happy.

From the above story we can conclude that firm faith and belief in our Guru is never wasted. Waheguru Ji is very kind and compassionate. He does not overlook even an iota of service.

So penji please do not lose hope. You may not be able to see him, but know that your Guru is always by your side. He will guide you and protect you along the way. He always comes to the aid of his devotees and I am sure he will help you too. So please continue to pray for your brother's well-being and do Ardaas daily for him. We will do so too.

Sorry for being so long. I wish you and your family the best for the future. May Waheguru Ji shower His grace and mercy upon your family and may you all be happy.

Hope it helps.
