What about Guru Nanak's responsibilty as a householder?

Guru Nanak Dev Ji taught us that the life of householder is extremely important. He had two sons, however he went on extensive travels during their lives and therefore they did not see him during this time. I am just wondering I guess how we can reconcile the fact that he wasn't there during that time. Is is because the need for him to serve the children of God (all of humanity) and spread the message of God was far greater than his need to be at home? or is there another explanation? Thanks, bhul chuck maaf karna. Just trying to learn.
