I am sorry to hear about your depression and that the medications have not helped (it’s probably a good idea to talk to your doctor about that). Before I talk about gurbani I just wanted to mention exercise is really helpful too so make sure to take out time to do that everyday if you aren’t already. All of the Guru Granth Sahib has great healing powers. I attended one of the Sarab Rog Ka Aukhad Naam camps in Canada this summer. It was a three-day camp and we read shabads from their “gurbani healing guide.” There were people coming up at the end of camp saying they had been healed of different types of ailments. In the guide (available free in English and Punjabi http://www.curesbygurbani.com/shabad-... Also see http://gurbanihealing.com on more information about Sarab Rog Ka Aukhad Naam). They have selected seven shabads in there with their translations which we read at camp. The idea is that reading any and all of Guru Granth Sahib Ji is healing, but those shabads particularly speak about healing and are somewhere for a person to start. I think understanding the gurbani we are reading helps us a great deal, it’s important to try to gain an understanding from it as gurbani is telling us how to live our lives. An easy place to start, easier than any and all of this is simran. I don’t know if you are currently doing simran. “Simro Simar Simar Sukh Pavo, Kal Kalesh Tin Mahi Mitavo”= “mediate, meditate, mediate in remembrance of Him, and find peace. Worry and anguish shall be dispelled from your body.” Through simran we can meet God, it helps us to be able to control the mind and stop our thoughts. The more we practice, the better we get at it. To do simran say Wahe (pulling belly button in) and Guru (pushing belly button out), keep the eyes closed so you aren’t distracted. Speak it out loud and listen to your voice. You can do simran while you do other activities during the day as well, but its important to make sit-down time where you just focus on simran and nothing else too. I know doing that may be especially difficult with the concentration difficulties that seems to develop when you have depression (I've had depression), so it might be helpful to get someone to do it with you or put on simran on youtube and speak alongside them. I For more information on simran visit mysimran.info, it also has simran audio you can listen to while you practice. I hope that helps.

Bhagheen Ji - In addition to reciting full Japji Sahib out loud each day, take time to do 11 extra repetitions of the first and the third pauris. You can do one in the morning and one in the evening or do both, one set of eleven of after the other.

The FIRST PAURI of Japji Sahib contains the total knowledge and ecstasy of God. The second half is an antidote to depression. It will lift you from depression, insecurity, nightmares, and loss.

kiv sachi-aaraa ho-ee-ai kiv koorhai tutai paal. hukam rajaa-ee chalnaa naanak likhi-aa naal.

The THIRD PAURI of Japji Sahib transforms insufficiency into sufficiency, turns depression into elevation, and transforms low self-esteem into complete self-confidence.

gaavai ko taan hovai kisai taan. gaavai ko daat jaanai neesaan.

gaavai ko gun vadi-aa-ee-aa chaar. gaavai ko vidi-aa vikham veechaar.

gaavai ko saaj karay tan khayh. gaavai ko jee-a lai fir dayh.

gaavai ko jaapai disai door. gaavai ko vaykhai haadraa hadoor.

kathnaa kathee na aavai tot. kath kath kathee kotee kot kot.

daydaa day laiday thak paahi. jugaa jugantar khaahee khaahi.

hukmee hukam chalaa-ay raahu. naanak vigsai vayparvaahu.

Try: listening to Gurbani/kirtan if its hard to concentrate on reading; sit in Sangat the Gurdwara and attend camps if possible; spend time with others who inspire you and help you feel strong; exercise because it helps the mind; take small steps towards healing. Have you thought about counselling?

reading translations of Gurbani is extremely soothing to the mind as well.

StrongKaur is correct. Don't just be alone with your son, you need support from Sangat now. If you don't have Sangat, bring your child with you to Gurdwara and allow Guru Ji bring you the support you need from that human contact.

Hi, So sorry to hear about your depression. Even I also went through a long term depression. Yes listening to gurbani will definitely heals you alot. You must also see some inspirational vedios. We go in depression because we focus on negative thought . Start focusing on positive thoughts I will definitely work. I also have followed these principals . Whenever you feel sad or depressed view an inspirational vedio then listen to gurbani. You will feel motivated. When you wake up read a postive thought daily because our mind is more active in morning. Discuss your problem with your family members. Search on Google effect of positive thinking on brain. Don't say it is impossible because I saw one vedio of a person he says impossible is a word created by a negative thinking person and a positive thinker says impossible says I a possible. Hope you recover soon and my tipsay help you https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=VbRxXPm... https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=mNlGogD... https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=T2DEYYv... https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=Wx9v_J3...

One time someone went to a spiritual teacher with deep depression. he said to do sahej path, again and agan and again. She was very zealous and did it, over and over again and her depression was healed. It took her many months. The advice given here is sound - talk to your doctor, exercise, read gurbani constantly.
