hello there, well this is one controversial matter jhatka has been an age old tradition in sikhi i believe it began at the time of the sixth guru, sri guru hargobind sahib maharaj. when being besieged there would be no food inside a fort as the supplies would of been cut of so the singhs and singhnia had no option but to eat the meat of there animals to survive this is also true to those that were in the jungles.

for meat to be jhatka one has to recite japji sahib and then chandi di vaar and on the last lines of chandi di vaar: "durga paath bania sabe pauria fer na jooni ayia tinai giya" the head of the animal is cut of with one slice of the sword.

the eating of meat was not to be for self pleasure but rather respect first the blood of the animal is offerd to the sword for its sustenance and then is distributed.

the rest of the animal also has to be used for weapons and the skin can be used to make drums so all of the animal has to be respected and not just eaten.

in sikhi if one wants to eat meat then it has to have gone through this process. one can only eat meat in one of these five situations.

number 1: in times of swordsmanship and training for growth and health (optional)

number 2: in times of battle (optional)

number 3: when under siege and their is no other food. (optional)

number 4: during childhood (optional)

number 5: during the elderly age and needed for growth or ill health if prescribed by doctor.

the guru said in the bibek the code of conduct "no fish no meat no eggs" but is one needs to eat it in one of theses 5 situations then it must be jhatkad and not out of greed.

Ok first of all lets get one thing straight eating meat or killing an animal is totally against Sikhism. No matter how many people say that eating meat or Jhatka is ok it is not true. Killing an animal even if it is humanly it is still KILLING the innocent animal. You are taking its life!

I was at an AKJ smagam and this line in a shabad was read.

"Jo sab mein eik khudhai kahiat ho,tau kyon MURGI mare" 'If you say that God abide within all living things then why do you kill the chicken' (the chicken being any animal being killed to be eaten.)

I personally would never eat meat not even if I am such low in iron that I need to start eating meat or I will die. (Oh God please don't let that happen to me or anyone.) I would still not eat meat. This is my thinking now an I hope it stays the same if I am faced with that kind of situation. (Oh God, toon mera rakha).

Bhul chook muaf.

So, you are suggesting that plants are not living? Just because we do not hear or understand their language means they are not alive? Are plants not innocent?

Dear Bimal Walia,

I never in my answer said that plants are not living things I didn't even mention plants. Plants and ainimals are very different from eacth other even science says so if your not ready to believe me which is why they were put in different kingdoms.

Look I could go on and on about the differences of plants and animals ok I love biology but all I'm going to do is tell you to click on this website and read every bit very very carefully.

Eating any kind of meat is AGAINST Sikhism. It is a Kureht.

Thank You

Dear Warrior,

I appreciate your argument. I saw the link you have posted. It looks very logical. But, my question is: on what pages from Sri Guru Granth Sahib has this information been taken from. This website says that all this info is from Sri Guru Granth Sahib, doesn`t it?

Did u not read what it said at the end of the article... Note: The above information does not contain verses from Guru Granth Sahib Ji... Oh and I sugest you click on this http://www.sikhiwiki.org/index.php/GuruGranthSahibonmeat If ur still not satisfied please comment again.

Dear Warrior, The link you provided above in the last comment is most significant. I hope more and more people come across it and contemplate over it. What I could infer from these shabads is that one may choose to eat or not eat but one must not let oneself become form a habit or get too indulged.

Waheguru ji ka Khalsa. Waheguru ji ki Fateh!

I have two questions for you:

1) Where is this information written, i.e non-veg is allowed under these 5 situations? 2) You said non-veg is allowed in childhood (number 4). WHY? And if yes, who decides when childhood is over and one becomes adult?

So here it is. I came across this Wiki page (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DietinSikhism) that says these following lines are from SGGS ji:

First Mehl: The fools argue about flesh and meat, but they know nothing about meditation and spiritual wisdom. What is called meat, and what is called green vegetables? What leads to sin? It was the habit of the gods to kill the rhinoceros, and make a feast of the burnt offering. Those who renounce meat, and hold their noses when sitting near it, devour men at night. They practice hypocrisy, and make a show before other people, but they do not understand anything about meditation or spiritual wisdom. O Nanak, what can be said to the blind people? They cannot answer, or even understand what is said. They alone are blind, who act blindly. They have no eyes in their hearts. They are produced from the blood of their mothers and fathers, but they do not eat fish or meat.

But, the original Gurumukhi text has not been provided, also, I am not able to trace out what page it has been taken from. If this is true then it means eating non-veg has nothing to do with religion/spirituality and in PARTICULAR SIKHISM...

aNYone wants to say something about this??

Yup. The key line in this shabd is " They alone are blind, who act blindly. They have no eyes in their hearts." The Guru talks over and over about acting blindly and uses many examples, e.g. rituals, yoga postures, etc. The quote isn't about meat or veg. It's about spiritual blindness.

sri guru gobind singh ji says in the rehat nama and rehat maryada that a sikh can eat meat BUT if a sikh wishes to stay a vegeterian due to the system of bibek created by the sixth guru then they can. thus they are called vaishnu who do not eat the flesh of an animal for any purpose but the guru says that the one who chooses to do so must stick to there word and not eat any meat atall be it fish meat or eggs that person must follow the system properly. they must eat out of iron so on so forth. the guru says that a sikh could only eat meat to survive for one musnt kill them selfes for devotion as all the gurus have stated the warrios only ate meat having to survive otherwise they couldnot fight they would grow weak and die.

in sikhi meat inst eaten for pleasure atall and when eaten must be respected with all heart the whole animal is used for war bones for weapons skin for drums etc.

Sikhism is transitionally vegetarian, and will always stay that way being spiritual and being vegetarian go hand in hand.

and just to state eating meat is only a sin when japji sahib, chandi di vaar and the stroke of the sword haven't been Incorporated in the process meaning that the meat has to be jhatka to be eaten the animal must of had the prayers read over it and then its head cut from its body as liberation from all life forms for the animals sacrifice.
