mala and its purpose

I have seen yogis use the mala. what exactly is the purpose of it. i have one and not sure how exactly to use it. How should i use my bead mala (for a beginner)

Satsriakal friend .. I am non-sikh ..but will try to answer your query, as I myself use a mala to chant. The basic use of mala is to keep the count of 'naam'. A mala has 108 beads. 108 is said to be a auspicious number and hence a mala has 108 beads. U can chant without a mala as well. To use as a beginner, it is advised not to touch the first finger(pointing finger) to the mala while chanting.

Also, traditionally, when you get to the large bead (Guru bead) thank Guru Ji and turn the mala around and go the other way. IOW, don't count the Guru bead. Stop and turn around each time you reach it.
