Lohri is a Hindu festival, it has nothing to do with Sikhism. But Indian Sikhs have been celebrating Lohri along with the North Indian Hindus for centuries. Similarly the festival of Rakhi is purely a Hindu tradition but Punjabi Sikhs along with the Hindus have been celebrating the festival of Rakhi for centuries.
Since almost all the Indian Punjabi Sikhs have had Hindu Punjabi ancestors, so the Hindu traditions have continued since their forefathers got converted to Sikhism.
For the Indian Punjabi Sikhs residing worldwide, Punjabi traditions are much more important to them than the traditions of Sikhism and that is the main reason behind as to why Punjabi Sikhs failed to propagate their faith amongst the non-Punjabis and Sikhism even after 546 years of existence has remained a Punjabi faith only.
So, Sikhism is purely an ethnic Punjabi religion. It cannot be called a global religion at all because 99.99% of the worldwide Sikhs have Punjabi roots.
Sikhs be it residing in the U.S Canada, Britain, Malaysia or in any part of the globe holding passport of the respective countries but the fact is their origin remains the tiny Indian Province of Punjab..

You can celebrate whatever you like! Just like many Sikhs celebrate Christmas they can celebrate lohri aswell!
Celebrate everything! Live in Chardi Kala and see God in everything. How can any harm come from this?
Saat Sri Akalji. .just to know. .can we punjabis light joth (Dewa) in our house. I light it everyday on the name of Sahid ji. ..
Mr.Brar, if you consider yourself simply a Punjabi then you are free to do anything related to religious practices and traditions but a Sikh has certain limitations. So, first decide for yourself are you a Sikh or just a Punjabi.
It is just that we believe that doing good deeds is the real worship of god, not lighting up candles in front of his idol or picture. That is all.
