God is already in relation to you even if you are not aware of it.

"What can the poor wooden puppet do? The Master Puppeteer knows everything. As the Puppeteer dresses the puppet, so is the role the puppet plays." (Guru Arjan Dev Ji ANG 206)

Sometimes God gives a person a "wake up call." This is an experience that shocks them awake and makes them deeply re-sort their priorities. This can happen any time. Sometimes it comes at a very low point in a person's life. Have you heard the expression "nowhere to go but up?" It may be something severe such as a major illness or injury, drug or alcohol addiction, attempted suicide or it can come any time as a "bolt out of the blue" for no apparent reason.

So even if one does not "seek" the relationship, that awareness may come at any time by His will.
