# obesity surgery

VJKK VJKF I am wondering if you can give advice please. I have been overweight since childhood, what they call obese. Alot of factors contributed to this due to issues at home, so I used to comfort eat. I then did this all my life, when I was 18, my weight went upto 23 stone, I was eating alot! Then I took action and tried to control it, as I grew older I knew I would have to do something otherwise I would die. I had asthma, along with alot of other problems. I managed to lose down to a weight of 17 stone. But then it stopped. Now I am 27 years old and my weight it always going up and down between 16-18 stone, basically I try all the diets, and go gym, I don't let my weight stop me moving, I am quite active for someone so big, but I still comfort eat and my weakness is eating large portions and the wrong foods. I sometimes follow a good diet and then about 4 weeks later I will totally crash and end up eating the wrong things. The problem I have is that I put on the weight within two weeks.

I do feel that I have problems losing weight and I have no confidence in myself, and I get very grumpy with my loved ones because I am depressed about my weight. It affects my life seriously. Recently I went to the weight loss surgery clinic and discussed my issues. They said that as my mum is diabetic and has blood pressure, chances are if I don't get my health fixed I will be sure to get health problems.

The lady said that for my BMI she recommends having a gastric band fitted would allow me to deal with my eating habits, and help me control portions and by following the plan along with exercise I should lose around 50% of my excess weight.

I have never let it get in the way of my sikhi and do ardas to Maharaj. But my question is it right to have this surgery in Sikhi? I know I am responsible for my problems, would Maharaj be okay with me doing this?

Waheguru Ji ka Khalsa Waheguru Ji ki Fateh! No, having the operation, per se, is not wrong. I know several people who have done it and it has improved their lives a lot. How is having this surgery not being responsible? Actually, it is being very responsible. It is a direct action to help yourself.

There are many factors that contribute to weight gain and you have identified some of them in your question. Understand, that depression, loneliness and lack of self-confidence will not go away with the surgery. Understand as well that you will have a significant recovery period, after which you will be able to eat no more than 225 gm of food per meal and no fizzy drinks. Your diet will change.

That said, the underlying emotional issues must be dealt with through strong daily sadhana and company of the Sadhsangat.

Weight can be managed. But if you think you have a bigger problem, you just need a bigger determination.

I will give some tips which helped me lose 10 kgs.

Like Guruka ji said, NO FIZZY DRINKS. No artificial drinks for that matter. Be a water man. At most have freshly squeezed juice. Rest all has concentrated sugar (natural or otherwise), even your Tropicana 100% juice are bad.

Avoid fried stuff and sweets like chocolate etc. Just give them up. Don't even have them like once a week. Let it go.

The next important thing is to have early breakfast at 8-9am. And chew your food 30 times before swallowing it. It helps in speeding up digesting.

Lastly, try reducing your portions by 1/3. You should know when your stomach is NOT HUNGRY instead of really full. We tend to eat as long as we enjoy the taste and stomach can take it. It is better to stop eating when you can.

Exercise wise you need running for 30 mins. Or at min, do 20 sit ups daily and 20 pushups on alternate days.

As long as you are strict to yourself, you should see results. Remember it is not dieting or losing weight, but a lifestyle change. You are ingesting only as much calories as you need. And exercise a little.

I totally agree with Kanwaljit virji. You need to change your lifestyle in-order to lose and maintain the weight. You don't have to starve yourself. Just eat 2 roti's instead of three. Eat smaller portions, several times a day. At first it would seem a lot cause you will think you are eating all day but remember you are only eating a small amount.

Ummmm sometimes our body is just thirsty but we think we are hungry, try drinking some water to see if you still need to munch on something!

Like virji said - 30mins of cardio, controlled diet should do the trick. By controlled diet, I DON'T mean starve yourself. You could try the following:

Breakfast: Tea/Milk/Cereal+fruit

Morning tea: Fruit/drink

Lunch: 2 roti's with sabji/daal or Subway/sandwich

Afternoon tea: Fruit/drink

Dinner: 2 roti's with sabji/daal or whatever you have

Before bedtime if you are really hungry: Milk <- optional

                  **Remember to drink lots of water!**


Please note the above isn't what you should stick to, it is just an example, you need to eat fruits, veggies, protein etc!

Ummmm ever heard this: Morning: Eat like a king, Lunch: Eat like a prince, Dinner: Eat like a beggar.
