Maya is any object, thing or a person which takes you away from God.
For example: You decide that you will do sukhmani sahib path today but then your friend shows up at the house and takes you to mall. Then at that time your friend is acting as maya. Or you decide to go to gurdwara and listen to bani but in your way you saw a huge sale at a shoe store and went there instead, then the shoes act as maya
Some Mahapurakhs have said even Maya is God. But when our mind takes us away from God and makes us focus more on the 'objective' things, then we suffer. We can't do without our friends, relatives, food, water, things etc. The deal is when the friend comes in while doing Sukhmani Sahib paath, it is up to us to decide what is more imp? Doing Paath or go visit a mall?
Maya is a part of God.
Gur Eesar Gur Gorakh Bhramaa Gur Paarvatee Maa-ee. (Japji Sahib, pauri 5) "The Guru is Jesus, Gorakh, Brahma, Parvatee and Maya."
Maya is not bad. It just is. It is the veil of illusion to which the Guru refers; Plato's shadows on the wall of the cave; the TV show in which we are all acting our parts. Just pixels on the screen ;-)
