Is the meaning of kirpan "merciless" as in to be merciless in battlefield ?

In sukhmani sahib

ji-o kirpan kay niraarath daam. like the wealth of a miser, which lies useless.

A miser is called kirpan because he is merciless he could help the destitute but he chooses to be dumb instead, is that the same word ?

No, it means the opposite: "merciful." The word has two roots: kirpa, meaning "mercy", "grace", "compassion" or "kindness"; and aanaa, meaning "honor", "grace" or "dignity".
