Politicians, such as the ones you mention, dig in their heels and maintain control by inducing fear in people and then promising to save them from what they fear. This is all a sign of the changing times.

The worst leaders are feared by the people. Then come the leaders who are obeyed, loved and praised. But the best leaders are those whose people hardly know they exist. They weigh their words carefully and speak but little. When they have accomplished their work, The people say: “We did this all by ourselves.”
