Can a jatt not have a surname

I have received a rista for my daughter, the family is Jatt Sikh like ourselves. They are saying they do not have a surname and use Singh. Apparently half of the pind had a surname and the other half used singh. Is this correct? Has anyone else experienced this relating to surnames
