handling mood swings

I face a lot of stressors in my life but normally I manage with techniques learned from Gurbani, patience, simran, breathing etc. Once a month around my period I ALWAYS will cry about something. I will insist that it is a real issue, when in fact I would have managed that issue fine had it not been such a hormone fluctuation. In fact I dont even realize it until I calm down and realize that I'm simply upset about this issue because of hormones and should just forget about it. Unfortunately this is not great for the rest of my family to live with, or me really because I'd rather not be crying every month on some random issue. And I become impulsive and say things I dont really mean, not mean things but just out of the usual crankiness at others. Yet I seem to forget this is going to happen every month until its already over. Secondly, I cannot rationalize it, calm down, or use my normal techniques cause I'm just too upset to see the reality at that point. I find myself very sensitive to issues and building up previous things from over the month to become upset about. Any suggestions on dealing with these mood swings? I know they are hormonally driven but when I feel so great the rest of the month its annoying. Particularly would be nice to hear from other Kaurs but anyone can answer.

StrongKaur Ji - Every woman goes through menstruation somehow. And every woman freaks out, either before or after. It's natural. It's a natural change of hormones and it affects the pituitary gland which controls all the other glands. So hey, capitalize on it! :-) "Oh, I am freaking out." So, go freak out. You have to freak out for 4 or 5 days. Men know about it. Either you will freak out before or you will freak out after. It's God's gift to you. It's not unusual. It's not unnatural. This world would be total boredom if women did not know how to freak out. So stop bashing yourself over it.

That said, this becomes about self-care. Track your menstrual cycle on your calendar or using an app like "Life - Period Tracker Calendar" which allows you to keep a symptom and mood log. Plan ahead to withdraw from family interactions more when you are hormonal. You know you are going to be reactive so plan a warm bath with scented candles and the lights turned down. Let yourself be more internally focused and self-loving. How about a foot rub?

I am so touched by your comment, it changes everything to accept that this is a natural thing and its OK. I feel like there is so much internal pressure to be a certain way, to not let my cramps and bleeding slow me down or to be emotional, but all I really want to do is rest.

First of all di, you're definitely a strong kaur and the help you give around here is amazing, like I applaud your knowledge. Second of all, you're right, what you are facing is due to hormonal changes. However, that doesn't mean the issue is not important. Whilst you go through that mood swing, just talk to yourself and think of all the possible solutions to the problem. Are you comfortable sharing even a little bit of your problem? If not, let me talk through examples. If its one recurrent issue that keeps bothering you during that time, it probably means that its bothering your unconscious mind a lot. Sometimes we say we've forgotten about something or have forgiven someone but we really haven't. The best thing I'd advice is to talk to yourself and find the real reason behind it as it keeps coming up. Another short tip is to take a deep breath and smile! Smiling tricks your brain into thinking that you're happy, which might lighten your mood and decrease your chances of crying. Even though sometimes what a person needs is just a little cry with someone, you can try that too, it might come in handy. Overall, I'm not an expert but these are just some tips I try and will advice the same :) Bhul Chuk Muaf karni.

thanks so much for your comment. really it means a lot. my problem just really depends on that day and that moment, I dont think any of them are recurrent issues. I do find laughing about something helpful but that almost always comes after the crying and discussing with a friend.

You're upmost welcome :) Well that just sounds like that, during that day, you come across something that bothers you which you cry out. Sharing it with your friend and crying it out is great, just let your emotions open, perhaps your body wants that :) and yes crying it out is great hahaha

yeah its like whatever happens that day was the "straw that broke the camel's back" and just put into overload from all the other stressors so i just cry it out.
