I recently attended a Sikh funeral and noticed people giving money to the deceased eldest son. I was told that since he was the eldest, he was now head of the household and money was provided to assist him in his new role.
Where does this custom come from? Is in based on teachings in Gurbani, or is the custom one of Punjabi culture?

This is purely part of the Punjabi culture. It has nothing to do with Sikhism and Gurbani. If you happen to live with the Punjabi Sikhs you will notice there are hundreds of Customs which are in fact contradictory to the teachings of Gurbani but today they are very much part of the Indian Punjabi Sikh traditions.
And the reason Punjabi Sikhs need not be blamed for all this is because almost all of the Punjabi Sikhs had Hindu ancestry. So, majority out of them still follow Hindu traditions or the right word to be used is, Indian traditions.
