Khand means partition.
Karam Khand -> People who work hard in life.
Gyaan Khand -> People who attain spiritual knowledge.
Dharam Khand -> People who don't abandon their duties even in hardships.
Brahm Khand -> People living in illusion
Roop Khand -> People who have reflect grace from their appearance.
Sach Khand -> People who live in the absolute truth
They are states of consciousness, realms you can experience. For a deeper dive: "The Five Khands in Japji"
Re: the Lavan. The Lavan is both instructions as well as description of the stages on the householder's path to liberation. Five Khands. Four rounds. Here is my most recent English translation of the Lavan.
thank you! that explains a lot. I am wondering that since the laavan of the anand karaj also define stages of spiritual development, do these correlate with the Khands as well?
No, not directly. The Khands are physical and etheric spaces you can experience. It's a literal description of what is experienced. Not stages - realms. The Lavan does describe stages of merger in a marriage.
