To be clear: I just began looking into sikhism. I'm not sure if this is a religion I will have a long-term commitment to, but for now I feel like this religion correlates with my beliefs. I want to stay as true to the religion as I can, which will prove difficult for me because of my young age.

Every month my mom makes me cut my hair. We always have the person cutting my hair trim off as little as possible, but she still wants me to get it cut because she wants me to get rid of my split ends. Additionally, when my armpit hairs grow out she'll shave them. (So far she hasn't commented on any other hairs, which I am grateful for). What should I do? Is a slight trim okay, if there's no way for me to get out of it? Or is cutting hair prohibited by any means?

One of the reasons in which why Sikhism teaches us not to cut our hair is because we need to reach a stage where looks do not matter. Being happy in our natural bodies and accepting the way in which God made us is one of the ways to achieve self-actualisation.

If you do feel like you wish to commit to Sikhi whole heartedly then maybe you try talking to your mother about the way you feel. In terms of split ends, it is natural to get them, your hair renews and grows all the time. There are other ways in which you can take care of your hair to prevent this from happening like not brushing wet hair, excessive use of heat tools i.e. hair dryers etc. It is also important to note that although there is a consensus about keeping bodily hair and it being unhygienic this is simply untrue. It is important to clean your body properly or it is unhygienic regardless of whether you have body hair.

If you wish to follow this path you should feel confident enough to make the right decision for you. If you do not feel like you can make a proper decision just yet there is no need to rush; you can take things slowly and when you truly feel that you want to follow the Sikh lifestyle you will know yourself what do next.

Sorry to say this Please learn to stand up for your self! if you want to follow Sikhi tell everyone! and stick with it! dont be pushed by anyone! you are you and have to live your life! Your mom or anyone will not pay for your Karmas or even stand infront of Kaal when Yaam comes to collect your soul! sorry for being so abrupt! If you let thso happening your life will just spiral into this yes i follow attitude or give in attitude and there are many people out there who can abuse that situation! stand up yourself! Its your hair, if you want to grow or not! be it head or underarms! I am in teh same situation, I lost my wife recentlya nd started going to the Gurudwara for peace of mind and doing Simran, and evertime i sit with teh family they have only controversy to talk about like there is a fight in a gurudwara in Canada? God what i can do about that! some people will walk all over you! Please stand up for your self! and i can guarantee your life will be a good and happy one! Best of luck! Bhul chuk Maff!
