Why the non-Sikh followers of 3HO are advised to suffiix their names with Singhs and Kaurs? Recently, i came across couple of profiles of the Egyptian females in FB having Kaurs as their last names but later came to know that they are non-Sikh followers of 3HO.

Anyone can choose to be called by any name and even legally change their name if they so wish. As to why a particular person chooses to use the name "Singh" or "Kaur," well, you would have to ask them about that. I suggest that we not generalize about 'this group' or 'that group,' but actually talk to the people we wish to learn from and find out the facts. It's such generalizing about people, or making assumptions about people that separate us and divide us. Rather let's come together and learn from each other.

Guruka Singh Ji, neither i am against any group nor do i intend to make any assumptions about any person. My curiosity arose when i saw profiles of Egyptian females having Kaurs as their names in FB, the reason i had never heard of the Sikh presence in Egypt. When i sent them friend request, i got the message from one of them saying that i am a Moslem not a Sikh, "Are you still interested in friendship" ? And then i replied back asking her the reason as to why she has added Kaur to her name. And then she did explain me that she is a follower of 3HO basically learning yoga from them and it was through their advise that she has added Kaur, the spiritual name but she is a follower of Islam and legally she still goes by her Moslem name.

That is the only reason of my curiosity as to why does 3HO advises it's non-Sikh followers to add Kaurs and hence i did post this question here in this forum. So, Guruka Singh Ji please don't take it in a wrong way. I know there are some people who do criticize 3HO goup as well as yoga but not me. As i am a non-Punjabi Sikh myself i do respect all the blocs and factions of the Sikh faith. I hope you will understand as what i am trying to explain. God bless you.

Ah, okay. Just to be clear, 3HO does NOT advise non-Sikhs to add Kaur or Singh to their name. Perhaps she talked to a particular person who inspired her to do this, but 3HO never advises this. Perhaps her yoga teacher is a Singh or Kaur and she was inspired to change her name as an aspiration.

Note: The above possible explanation is only speculation on my part. Your question is interesting because many Punjabis use the name Singh or Kaur, but do not live as a Singh or Kaur yet many goray who do live as Singhs and Kaurs do not change their names.

Guruka Singh Ji, i do agree with you in toto that rather than the name what is more important is the Rehat. Those Westerners who have embraced Sikhism do follow the Rehat from the heart. And that is what our tenth Master expects from a Sikh. His own words, "Rehat Pyari Mujhko Sikh Pyara Nahi".
