The purpose of our life is to meet God. Every person is child of God, and we need to see God in everyone. This means treating people with kindness, empathy, compassion and love. Be an example for other people. These people don't understand their purpose. They don't understand that their bad karms will come back to hurt them. Just because other people don't understand their purpose, does not mean that you should lose your own chance to meet God and fulfill your life's purpose by becoming like them. Just understand people are at different points of understanding, and part of our understanding needs to be that we respect where people are on their path and don't judge them. They don't understand how their behaviour hurts others and themselves. It can certainly be lonely to be the only one treating others well when those around you are all walking a different path, but at least you know that you are the rare person who is fulfilling your purpose. At the time of Guru Nanak, tons of people were doing useless things, harmful things, etc. Guru Ji still walked his own path, and changed other people in that process.

Unfortunately kind-hearted people are vulnerable to abuse and manipulation by others. I think there is an invisible boundary where you can be kind and see the good qualities in people, but also protect yourself by understanding their goals in life are different than yours so if you can limit the time you spend with them. spend time with kind-hearted people. if not possible, set limits. You can be a kind person and still say no to people and stand up for what you believe. Setting up boundaries can be challenging if you aren't used to it.
