The parents job is to serve the soul of the child. To care for, protect, give the values and provide a secure environment. That seva is a blessing and should be understood acknowledged as such. You do not say how old this child is. Legally, in most countries, children are pretty much their parents "property" until the age of 18,but spiritually children never belong to parents. Each child has his or her own destiny written. His or her relationship with the Guru is already determined, not by the child but by the Guru. All parents need to do is live in the joy of their own Sikhi and thereby show naturally and spontaneously the happiness that their own Sikhi brings to them. Each human being will make whatever decisions they make and come to the Guru or not as He wishes. "disowning" a child is simply a form of emotional blackmail a parent uses to try to exert control over the child. It ends up hurting the parents far more than the child.
