The answer is simple: NO. The Granthi was not justified in doing this. It was done out of ego in order to look good in the eyes of others. In fact, it's a violation of our rehit, which says to leave the body unaltered, in its natural state. Faking long hair is not leaving the body in its natural state. Same reason people decide to cut their hairs, appearances. To look a certain way to others in order to gain some benefit for themselves.
