You mentioned above of the meditation Mala now this cannot be termed as a desire for materialistic product because Mala is for the purpose of chanting WaheGuru's name.
Even skin products, desire for branded clothes, cars, house, etc etc. are concerned these are the basic amenities which every human desires and are quite necessary but yes if the human being goes to any extent even if through illegal and immoral means to acquire the above mentioned things then that goes against the Rehat. So we can't stop ourselves from the desires arising within our hearts.
