I don’t know if you have seen this but it’s a great video on Nimrata http://www.sikhnet.com/video/what-humbleness-nimrata
Guruka Singh explains Nimrata as an internal feeling coming from the awe of God, and does not have to do with how you behave with other people. Therefore I think It does not prevent you from doing what you need to do to stand up for yourself in your workplace. If you feel like you are being treated like a slave it’s important to say something. Just because you are volunteering does not mean you should be treated unfairly. Think about it what you would do if you had a friend being treated like that, as a Sikh you would stand up for them. Ok so now you decide how that discussion is going to go. I think it’s important to speak to the person in charge in a neutral setting where there isn’t going to be a big scene. Spend some time thinking about how to talk about this in a calm manner and communicate how you are feeling. Then it comes down to conflict resolution skills/communication skills and try to come up with a solution. Good luck!
