People will say whatever. Parents will say whatever. That's on them, not on you. Listen to shabad is not running away. Why do you think that? It is choosing to tune yourself to the Bani rather than engaging. That is not cowardice. It is a conscious choice. All relationships pivot on two things, effective communication and love, you cannot change others, but you can change yourself.

When you deepen your relationship with your own soul and with your Guru, then the rest of your life will come into alignment. Without that, life will be a roller coaster of ups and downs.
