I am sorry if I had simply cut and paste from a previous answer about a gentleman asking about wearing a beanie as opposed to a dastar with formatting errors:

There is no rule to wear bana in the Sri Guru Granth Sahib, this is purely cultural and developed from tradition as the Guru's have worn one since Guru Angad Dev and later with the formation of the Khalsa (Guru Gobind Singh: Kangha dono vaqt kar, paag chune kar bandhai. ("Comb your hair twice a day and tie your turban carefully, turn by turn.")). In fact, there are more quotes about the uselessness of a pagri because it's not what you wear ON your head, it's what's IN your head. You need to worry about being a good person, not about a cleanly tied and starched turban versus a tying a backwards joorha.

ਬੰਕੇ ਬਾਲ ਪਾਗ ਸਿਰਿ ਡੇਰੀ ॥ बंके बाल पाग सिरि डेरी ॥ Banke bāl pāg sir derī. You make your hair beautiful, and wear a stylish turban on your head.

ਇਹੁ ਤਨੁ ਹੋਇਗੋ ਭਸਮ ਕੀ ਢੇਰੀ ॥੩॥ इहु तनु होइगो भसम की ढेरी ॥३॥ Ih ṯan ho▫igo bẖasam kī dẖerī. ||3||

You are nothing more than a bundle of bones, wrapped in skin, filled with manure; you give off such a rotten smell! ||1||Pause|| ਰਾਮ ਨ ਜਪਹੁ ਕਵਨ ਭ੍ਰਮ ਭੂਲੇ ਤੁਮ ਤੇ ਕਾਲੁ ਨ ਦੂਰੇ ॥ राम न जपहु कवन भ्रम भूले तुम ते कालु न दूरे ॥ Rām na japahu kavan bẖaram bẖūle ṯum ṯe kāl na ḏūre. You do not meditate on the Lord. What doubts have confused and deluded you? Death is not far away from you! ਅਨਿਕ ਜਤਨ ਕਰਿ ਇਹੁ ਤਨੁ ਰਾਖਹੁ ਰਹੈ ਅਵਸਥਾ ਪੂਰੇ ॥੨॥ अनिक जतन करि इहु तनु राखहु रहै अवसथा पूरे ॥२॥ Anik jaṯan kar ih ṯan rākẖo rahai avasthā pūre. ||2|| Making all sorts of efforts, you manage to preserve this body, but it shall only survive until its time is up. ||2|| ਆਪਨ ਕੀਆ ਕਛੂ ਨ ਹੋਵੈ ਕਿਆ ਕੋ ਕਰੈ ਪਰਾਨੀ ॥ आपन कीआ कछू न होवै किआ को करै परानी ॥ Āpan kī▫ā kacẖẖū na hovai ki▫ā ko karai parānī. By one's own efforts, nothing is done. What can the mere mortal accomplish? ਜਾ ਤਿਸੁ ਭਾਵੈ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਭੇਟੈ ਏਕੋ ਨਾਮੁ ਬਖਾਨੀ ॥੩॥ जा तिसु भावै सतिगुरु भेटै एको नामु बखानी ॥३॥ Jā ṯis bẖāvai saṯgur bẖetai eko nām bakẖānī. ||3|| When it pleases the Lord, the mortal meets the True Guru, and chants the Name of the One Lord. ||3|| ਬਲੂਆ ਕੇ ਘਰੂਆ ਮਹਿ ਬਸਤੇ ਫੁਲਵਤ ਦੇਹ ਅਇਆਨੇ ॥ बलूआ के घरूआ महि बसते फुलवत देह अइआने ॥ Balū▫ā ke gẖarū▫ā mėh basṯe fulvaṯ ḏeh a▫i▫āne. ਰਾਮੁ ਬਿਸਾਰਿਓ ਹੈ ਅਭਿਮਾਨਿ ॥ रामु बिसारिओ है अभिमानि ॥ Rām bisāri▫o hai abẖimān. In your egotistical pride, you have forgotten the Lord ਸਚੁ ਕਮਾਵੈ ਸੋਈ ਕਾਜੀ ॥ सचु कमावै सोई काजी ॥ Sacẖ kamāvai so▫ī kājī. He alone is a Qazi, who practices the Truth. ਜੋ ਦਿਲੁ ਸੋਧੈ ਸੋਈ ਹਾਜੀ ॥ जो दिलु सोधै सोई हाजी ॥ Jo ḏil soḏẖai so▫ī hājī. He alone is a Haji, a pilgrim to Mecca, who purifies his heart. ਸੋ ਮੁਲਾ ਮਲਊਨ ਨਿਵਾਰੈ ਸੋ ਦਰਵੇਸੁ ਜਿਸੁ ਸਿਫਤਿ ਧਰਾ ॥੬॥ सो मुला मलऊन निवारै सो दरवेसु जिसु सिफति धरा ॥६॥ So mulā mala▫ūn nivārai so ḏarves jis sifaṯ ḏẖarā. ||6|| He alone is a Mullah, who banishes evil; he alone is a saintly dervish, who takes the Support of the Lord's Praise. ||6|| ਸਭੇ ਵਖਤ ਸਭੇ ਕਰਿ ਵੇਲਾ ॥ सभे वखत सभे करि वेला ॥ Sabẖe vakẖaṯ sabẖe kar velā. Always, at every moment, ਖਾਲਕੁ ਯਾਦਿ ਦਿਲੈ ਮਹਿ ਮਉਲਾ ॥ खालकु यादि दिलै महि मउला ॥ Kẖālak yāḏ ḏilai mėh ma▫ulā. remember God, the Creator within your heart. ਤਸਬੀ ਯਾਦਿ ਕਰਹੁ ਦਸ ਮਰਦਨੁ ਸੁੰਨਤਿ ਸੀਲੁ ਬੰਧਾਨਿ ਬਰਾ ॥੭॥ तसबी यादि करहु दस मरदनु सुंनति सीलु बंधानि बरा ॥७॥ Ŧasbī yāḏ karahu ḏas marḏan sunaṯ sīl banḏẖān barā. ||7|| Let your meditation beads be the subjugation of the ten senses. Let good conduct and self-restraint be your circumcision. ||7|| ਦਿਲ ਮਹਿ ਜਾਨਹੁ ਸਭ ਫਿਲਹਾਲਾ ॥ दिल महि जानहु सभ फिलहाला ॥ Ḏil mėh jānhu sabẖ filhālā. You must know in your heart that everything is temporary. ਖਿਲਖਾਨਾ ਬਿਰਾਦਰ ਹਮੂ ਜੰਜਾਲਾ ॥ खिलखाना बिरादर हमू जंजाला ॥ Kẖilkẖānā birāḏar hamū janjālā. Family, household and siblings are all entanglements. ਮੀਰ ਮਲਕ ਉਮਰੇ ਫਾਨਾਇਆ ਏਕ ਮੁਕਾਮ ਖੁਦਾਇ ਦਰਾ ॥੮॥ मीर मलक उमरे फानाइआ एक मुकाम खुदाइ दरा ॥८॥ Mīr malak umre fānā▫i▫ā ek mukām kẖuḏā▫e ḏarā. ||8|| Kings, rulers and nobles are mortal and transitory; only God's Gate is the permanent place. ||8|| ਅਵਲਿ ਸਿਫਤਿ ਦੂਜੀ ਸਾਬੂਰੀ ॥ अवलि सिफति दूजी साबूरी ॥ Aval sifaṯ ḏūjī sābūrī. First, is the Lord's Praise; second, contentment; ਤੀਜੈ ਹਲੇਮੀ ਚਉਥੈ ਖੈਰੀ ॥ तीजै हलेमी चउथै खैरी ॥ Ŧījai halemī cẖa▫uthai kẖairī. third, humility, and fourth, giving to charities. ਪੰਜਵੈ ਪੰਜੇ ਇਕਤੁ ਮੁਕਾਮੈ ਏਹਿ ਪੰਜਿ ਵਖਤ ਤੇਰੇ ਅਪਰਪਰਾ ॥੯॥ पंजवै पंजे इकतु मुकामै एहि पंजि वखत तेरे अपरपरा ॥९॥ Punjvai panje ikaṯ mukāmai ehi panj vakẖaṯ ṯere aparparā. ||9|| Fifth is to hold one's desires in restraint. These are the five most sublime daily prayers. ||9|| ਸਗਲੀ ਜਾਨਿ ਕਰਹੁ ਮਉਦੀਫਾ ॥ सगली जानि करहु मउदीफा ॥ Saglī jān karahu ma▫uḏīfā. Let your daily worship be the knowledge that God is everywhere. ਬਦ ਅਮਲ ਛੋਡਿ ਕਰਹੁ ਹਥਿ ਕੂਜਾ ॥ बद अमल छोडि करहु हथि कूजा ॥ Baḏ amal cẖẖod karahu hath kūjā. Let renunciation of evil actions be the water-jug you carry. ਖੁਦਾਇ ਏਕੁ ਬੁਝਿ ਦੇਵਹੁ ਬਾਂਗਾਂ ਬੁਰਗੂ ਬਰਖੁਰਦਾਰ ਖਰਾ ॥੧੦॥ खुदाइ एकु बुझि देवहु बांगां बुरगू बरखुरदार खरा ॥१०॥ Kẖuḏā▫e ek bujẖ ḏevhu bāŉgāŉ burgū barkẖurḏār kẖarā. ||10|| Let realization of the One Lord God be your call to prayer; be a good child of God - let this be your trumpet. ||10|| ਹਕੁ ਹਲਾਲੁ ਬਖੋਰਹੁ ਖਾਣਾ ॥ हकु हलालु बखोरहु खाणा ॥ Hak halāl bakẖorahu kẖāṇā. Let what is earned righteously be your blessed food. ਦਿਲ ਦਰੀਆਉ ਧੋਵਹੁ ਮੈਲਾਣਾ ॥ दिल दरीआउ धोवहु मैलाणा ॥ Ḏil ḏarī▫ā▫o ḏẖovahu mailāṇā. Wash away pollution with the river of your heart. ਪੀਰੁ ਪਛਾਣੈ ਭਿਸਤੀ ਸੋਈ ਅਜਰਾਈਲੁ ਨ ਦੋਜ ਠਰਾ ॥੧੧॥ पीरु पछाणै भिसती सोई अजराईलु न दोज ठरा ॥११॥ Pīr pacẖẖāṇai bẖisṯī so▫ī ajrā▫īl na ḏoj ṯẖarā. ||11|| One who realizes the Prophet attains heaven. Azraa-eel, the Messenger of Death, does not cast him into hell. ||11|| ਕਾਇਆ ਕਿਰਦਾਰ ਅਉਰਤ ਯਕੀਨਾ ॥ काइआ किरदार अउरत यकीना ॥ Kā▫i▫ā kirḏār a▫uraṯ yakīnā. Let good deeds be your body, and faith your bride. ਰੰਗ ਤਮਾਸੇ ਮਾਣਿ ਹਕੀਨਾ ॥ रंग तमासे माणि हकीना ॥ Rang ṯamāse māṇ hakīnā. Play and enjoy the Lord's love and delight.

ਨਾਪਾਕ ਪਾਕੁ ਕਰਿ ਹਦੂਰਿ ਹਦੀਸਾ ਸਾਬਤ ਸੂਰਤਿ ਦਸਤਾਰ ਸਿਰਾ ॥੧੨॥ नापाक पाकु करि हदूरि हदीसा साबत सूरति दसतार सिरा ॥१२॥ Nāpāk pāk kar haḏūr haḏīsā sābaṯ sūraṯ ḏasṯār sirā. ||12|| Purify what is impure, and let the Lord's Presence be your religious tradition. Let your total awareness be the turban on your head. ||12|| ਧਿਗੁ ਤਿਨ੍ਹ੍ਹਾ ਦਾ ਜੀਵਿਆ ਜਿਨਾ ਵਿਡਾਣੀ ਆਸ ॥੨੧॥ धिगु तिन्हा दा जीविआ जिना विडाणी आस ॥२१॥ Ḏẖig ṯinĥā ḏā jīvi▫ā jinā vidāṇī ās. ||21|| Cursed are the lives of those who place their hopes in others. ||21|| ਫਰੀਦਾ ਜੇ ਮੈ ਹੋਦਾ ਵਾਰਿਆ ਮਿਤਾ ਆਇੜਿਆਂ ॥ फरीदा जे मै होदा वारिआ मिता आइड़िआं ॥ Farīḏā je mai hoḏā vāri▫ā miṯā ā▫iṛi▫āŉ. Fareed, if I had been there when my friend came, I would have made myself a sacrifice to him. ਹੇੜਾ ਜਲੈ ਮਜੀਠ ਜਿਉ ਉਪਰਿ ਅੰਗਾਰਾ ॥੨੨॥ हेड़ा जलै मजीठ जिउ उपरि अंगारा ॥२२॥ Heṛā jalai majīṯẖ ji▫o upar angārā. ||22|| Now my flesh is burning red on the hot coals. ||22|| ਫਰੀਦਾ ਲੋੜੈ ਦਾਖ ਬਿਜਉਰੀਆਂ ਕਿਕਰਿ ਬੀਜੈ ਜਟੁ ॥ फरीदा लोड़ै दाख बिजउरीआं किकरि बीजै जटु ॥ Farīḏā loṛai ḏākẖ bij▫urī▫āŉ kikar bījai jat. Fareed, the farmer plants acacia trees, and wishes for grapes. ਹੰਢੈ ਉਂਨ ਕਤਾਇਦਾ ਪੈਧਾ ਲੋੜੈ ਪਟੁ ॥੨੩॥ हंढै उंन कताइदा पैधा लोड़ै पटु ॥२३॥ Handẖai unn kaṯā▫iḏā paiḏẖā loṛai pat. ||23|| He is spinning wool, but he wishes to wear silk. ||23|| ਫਰੀਦਾ ਗਲੀਏ ਚਿਕੜੁ ਦੂਰਿ ਘਰੁ ਨਾਲਿ ਪਿਆਰੇ ਨੇਹੁ ॥ फरीदा गलीए चिकड़ु दूरि घरु नालि पिआरे नेहु ॥ Farīḏā galī▫e cẖikaṛ ḏūr gẖar nāl pi▫āre nehu. Fareed, the path is muddy, and the house of my Beloved is so far away. ਚਲਾ ਤ ਭਿਜੈ ਕੰਬਲੀ ਰਹਾਂ ਤ ਤੁਟੈ ਨੇਹੁ ॥੨੪॥ चला त भिजै क्मबली रहां त तुटै नेहु ॥२४॥ Cẖalā ṯa bẖijai kamblī rahāŉ ṯa ṯutai nehu. ||24|| If I go out, my blanket will get soaked, but if I remain at home, then my heart will be broken. ||24|| ਭਿਜਉ ਸਿਜਉ ਕੰਬਲੀ ਅਲਹ ਵਰਸਉ ਮੇਹੁ ॥ भिजउ सिजउ क्मबली अलह वरसउ मेहु ॥ Bẖija▫o sija▫o kamblī alah varsa▫o mehu. My blanket is soaked, drenched with the downpour of the Lord's Rain. ਜਾਇ ਮਿਲਾ ਤਿਨਾ ਸਜਣਾ ਤੁਟਉ ਨਾਹੀ ਨੇਹੁ ॥੨੫॥ जाइ मिला तिना सजणा तुटउ नाही नेहु ॥२५॥ Jā▫e milā ṯinā sajṇā ṯuta▫o nāhī nehu. ||25|| I am going out to meet my Friend, so that my heart will not be broken. ||25|| ਫਰੀਦਾ ਮੈ ਭੋਲਾਵਾ ਪਗ ਦਾ ਮਤੁ ਮੈਲੀ ਹੋਇ ਜਾਇ ॥ फरीदा मै भोलावा पग दा मतु मैली होइ जाइ ॥ Farīḏā mai bẖolāvā pag ḏā maṯ mailī ho▫e jā▫e. Fareed, I was worried that my turban might become dirty. ਗਹਿਲਾ ਰੂਹੁ ਨ ਜਾਣਈ ਸਿਰੁ ਭੀ ਮਿਟੀ ਖਾਇ ॥੨੬॥ गहिला रूहु न जाणई सिरु भी मिटी खाइ ॥२६॥ Gahilā rūhu na jāṇ▫ī sir bẖī mitī kẖā▫e. ||26|| My thoughtless self did not realize that one day, dust will consume my head as well. ||26||
