Think about the concept of Gyan Khadag in Gurbani and Sikhi. Langar is made while reciting Waheguru and doing Simran/Jap. And the last thing we do before distributing Langar or Degh is do bhog with Kirpan. Simran is spiritual while Kirpan is temporal. It is the Miri Piri of our Gurus and it signifies that in the beginning and in the end there is Waheguru, and nothing else in between.
