The Palki Sahib (or Manji Sahib) elevates the guru above the Sangat. When the Guru speaks to us, the voice of the Guru is aligned with our ajna - so we meditate on the Guru's words. So in addition to respect and honor to the Guru, the elevation of the Guru's physical position is part of it.
