Raga Wadhans is a complete raga of Khmaj School of Music. This raga is sung at the fourth part of the day i.e., from 3 pm to 6 pm. The season of its recitation is winter (shisher) i.e., during December and January. In Guru Granth Sahib it has hymns from ANGs 557-594. You are correct that the word "Mahala" or "Mahalla" or "Mehla" at the top of the Shabad identifies which Guru is the author of the verses that follow. The word 'Mehl" translates to "abode" or "mansion."

I believe this is to acknowledge that the bodies of our 10 Gurus were like houses or abodes that contained the Shabad/Jot, or through which the shabad came through, that's what made them our Sat Gurus. Guru Nanak Ji used to say to Mardana Ji, please get the Rubab "Dhur Ki Bani Aayie" meaning Gurbani will be coming through my body from Sach Khand.

So, the Gurus are referred to Mehl 1 , 2 3 etc, their bodies were conduits for the Shabad. As Guru, each Guru from Guru Nanak Dev Ji to Guru Granth Sahib Ji had the same Jot/soul, only their outwardly appearance is different. This backed up by: "Bani Guru, Guru ki Bani."
