Are people good and bad?

I am the type of person that tries to see people as inherently good. It is my understanding that in Sikhi we are supposed to see all as children of God. Their souls are good, but they have accumulated dirt upon themselves through bad actions and we have a hard time seeing their good qualities sometimes. One of my non-sikh friends says some people are bad people who occasionally choose to do good things- these people are not good people who do bad things. I've heard quite a few people who tell me "one day you will see it the same as us." I kind of really hope i don't see it that way one day, i don't want to let go of the part of me that sees others as good and deserving of love and compassion and forgiveness. Given that all these people are older than me and have more life experience though i wonder if i am wrong. Are there good people and bad people, is my friend right about that? When we really get to know people we realize that behind everyone who has done a bad action (even murderers) there will be people who love them and say good things about them. What about all the people who battled against the Gurus, like Aurangzeb. They did evil things... do we call them bad/evil, did the Gurus call them bad or evil?
