Do`s and Don`ts for doing Chaliye (40 days)

I want to start chaliye for a sukh. Are there any specific dos and donts for doing chaliye for a sukh?
What about non-veg? I will obviously not eat it during the chaliye but should I ask my family members not to cook it in house as well?
I have always been confused about whether or not it is alright to eat non-veg. Though, I do not have much liking to eating it now. One, we hear stories about how Akaal Purakh waheguru ji has created this entire world and we should enjoy it; Second, don`t plants have life?...they are also living beings...if we eat them then why not non-veg?
I have tried to look online about what did Guru Nanakji say about the matter, or did he even thought of it as a subject of conversation? Any mention about the matter in Guru gRanth Sahib? Or Dasam Granth?
Kindly let me know what is the maryada for doing chaliye?
