According to the Akal Takht, an amritdhari Sikh may only eat Jhatka meat, the quick killing of an animal so that they don't feel the pain, rather than Halal or Kosher meat which makes the animal die a slow and painful death. To quote Guru Nanak,"The fools argue about flesh and meat, but they know nothing about meditation and spiritual wisdom". A vegetarian lifestyle will not send you to Heaven alone, and it is the spiritual wisdom that Guru Nanak speaks of that will. Bhagat Kabir was very much interested in this topic and stated, "When the One God resides in all why do you kill the bird?" Guru Nanak did agree that it won't determine you in being saved in the end all that much when he was speaking to those followers of his who were of Hinduism and Islam. We must remember that at Guru Nanak's time, Sikhs (who were then called Sishyas) were not a defined faith but a grouping together of Islam, Honduism, and other faiths.

Bhagat Kabir seems much more angry at the meat-eaters than Guru Nanak like when he says "Those mortals who consume marijuana, fish and wine; no matter what pilgrimages, fasts and rituals they follow, they will all go to hell," When Kabirji says "fish" he means "meat" and not only fish, which he probably did because he is a poet. By not looking deeply at certain gurbani passages, it will seem as if Guru Nanak and Bhagat Kabir contradict each other about the eating of meat. But Bhagat Kabir too had followers who treated his teachings as a full religion (Kabirpanthi), rather than Guru Nanak's original followers who kept their religion but also followed him. He set out the religious law for his followers, the Kabirpanthis (who later acquired this name near modern times), rather than how Guru Nanak decided to let the Muslims eat meat because they follow the ritual of Halal slaughtering. But, when Guru Arjan compiled the Adhi Granth, he selected certain passages of anti-meat eating by Kabir because Sikhs weren't allowed to eat meat according to the law he taught. Sikhs will go to Hell if they eat meat (without repentance), but Christians, Jews, and Muslims won't because they are adhering to their path.

As wise as he was, Guru Nanak pointed out that vegetation too was treated poorly (not just meat), and it too is living and breathing. He wrote, "Look, and see how the sugar-cane is cut down. After cutting away its branches, its feet are bound together into bundles, and then, it is placed between the wooden rollers and crushed. What punishment is inflicted upon it! Its juice is extracted and placed in the cauldron; as it is heated, it groans and cries out. And then, the crushed cane is collected and burnt in the fire below. Nanak: come, people, and see how the sweet sugar-cane is treated!" By saying this he also expressed his wish for ... (more)

No, a Sikh is not allowed to eat meat. It is only a rumor that spread the Guru Gobind Singh Ji used to eat meat. Guru Gobind Singh Ji used to hunt in order to keep animals from wreaking havoc in villages so people associated Guru Gobind Singh Ji for eating meat. Also, had Guru Ji allowed Sikhs to eat meat, they would have easily survived when they were in war with the Muslim army. Not eating meat made the Sikh Soldiers eat tree bark and leaves. That is why the 40 muktai .. sorry if spelled incorrectly. .. were forced to leave the army of the Khalsa in bad times.

People may argue that the Muslim didn't allow the Sikhs to get out of the red fort.. I believe... but if you think about it, Guru Ji and loyal Sikhs stayed away from meat, whether they killed it fast or slow.

There is a line in Gurbani which says something like this," Why is it that when blood spills upon your clothes you must wash it immediately, but you have no problem eating food that contains the same blood."

Basic answer is NO, Sikh people can not eat meat

First of all, There is nothing like painless death by JHATKHA. If someone believe that the one who dies by JHATKHA goes to heaven then just kill yourself by JHATKHA and go to heaven please and let there be peace not suffering. You call this religion as saviour of weak and now justifying the killing of those weaker animals who can't even defend themself. So whats the point of being a saviour at first place and becoming a killer at last. You people are nothing more than meriless killers who kills the weakened for nothing more than mere tingling their taste buds. Have some shame instead of proud for killing all those innocent animals, They ain't any harm to you but you are the greatest harm to their lives and stop braging about going to heaven for killing those animals who don't stand a chance against merciless intentions of yours to kill. You people are not defenders of humanity you are just killers of humanity. Je kise jeonde jee da bhla ni na kar sakde ta kise nu maro vi na eh kehke ohnu asi swargan ch bhejta.

Well I also want to ask the same question. I've seen on a lot of websites that jhatka meat is allowed in Sikhism (I'm talking about non amritdhari Sikhs with proper kesh). My answer is bit different. In fact I would like to ask a question. Other religions in overseas countries, especially English speaking countries, White people dint say that eating meat is wrong. Infact they celebrate their festivals by serving meat. Will they go to hell?????

No, it's not at all O.K to eat meat as it goes against the Sikh Rehat Maryada. A true Sikh is expected to be pure vegetarian not even eggetarian.

I am agreed with the above statement as bhag Kabir ji said

"Jab sab Mai ek jhudaye hai too kyu murgi mare"

Meaning of this is, if you are saying there is GOD in all living beings then why you are killing animals,is GOD doesn't exist in them.

And what means this is carrying that SIKH can eat JHATKA and Muslim can eat HALAL, KABIR ji had made a statement on this point that it doesn't matter that what process is followed to kill an animal weather its JHATKA OR HALAL procedure, but the point is after following both the procedure animal can't live, they got killed whatever procedure you follow.

So I am very much sure about this that in Sikhism meat is not allowed. But why it is not allowed I want to know that.

Because as Kabir ji said "JAB SAB MAI EK KHUDAYE HAI TOO KYU MURGI MARE"

which means he is saying to those who said there ia GOD in all of us so why you are killing animal.

And here my doubt is that plants and trees also are living animal and in all living beings there is one and same GOD. So indirectly we are killing living beings to fill up our basic needs.

And indirectly we can say we are eating meat.

So I want the answer of this.
