Becoming a Sikh : from where to start ? Please suggest some books.

This post is a wiki. Anyone with karma >100 is welcome to improve it.

I have no knowledge about Guru Granth Sahib or waheguru meditation. But I do want to know and more importantly, implement it in my day to day life. Please suggest me, what should I do? On a scale of 5, I can read Punjabi 3/5, and understand 2/5. Should I first improve my Punjabi? Are the translations or interpretations good enough? Please suggest some good books.
