Using Your Mouth To Tie A Turban

When I tie my turban I put part of it in my mouth (the first laar) as it is practical and easy for me to tie. But I have heard people complain that putting the turban in your mouth is wrong and disrespectful. I don’t understand why it is considered disrespectful?

Without putting it in my mouth I would have extreme difficulties tying it. I apologize if my ignorance has caused anyone offense.

As far as putting your turban in your mouth, it's just another thing that makes one Sikh different from another. Guru Ji never said anything about it. It's how much you respect your mouth I guess. I recite Gurbani from my mouth everyday, and so I don't mind if the end of my turban is in my mouth for a little while. If there is any part of our body that is unholy then perhaps we shouldn't adorn a turban at all on the top of our body.

Each body has nine holes, the tenth one is kept hidden. The turban covers the 10th, as well as both ears. I guess for some the ear hole is more sacred than the mouth hole because they allow their turban to touch one but not the other.

Its not the physical turban that we should be so ritualistcally worried about. Its a piece of cloth. The signicance behind it... behind wearing it proudly is whats important. If putting in your mouth helps you tie it than do so. Logic people. Logic!

its a totally personal choice, nothing disrespectful with it. Anyways, it just stays in the mouth for 5-10 min and thousands of sikhs worldwide use that method.. I personally put it in the mouth, but dont use the same end when I am tying my turban for the 2nd time.. However, when I tie the dumalla, I don't need to put one end in my mouth.. If somebody can tie it in some other way, its totally good. However, there is no right and wrong in this regard..

I used to do that earlier. One day I saw the end of my turban and wasn't very happy about it, it looked unclean. So I take one end, let it be on my forehead and bring the larr around my head, over it. That way it locks itself in place and I don't have to hold in mouth.

There is nothing in Sikh code that says this practice for tying turban is disrespectful. I have seen the former jethadar of Akal Takht use this method. For those that believe it is wrong, OK. For those that find it helpful, OK. Let's stop being fanatic about such things!! Guru ang sang - DKK
