That time in India and still in rural India women were considered as a more of a commodity. Hindus used to burn their widows alive on her husband's corpse. Muslims had harems etc. and could religiously beat their wives . when a girl was married she had to get ear and nose pierced so that her in laws could control her (just like a cattle) . So its the people who had this cancerous attitude not relgion.

Guru Nanak even said

bhand jammee-ai bhand nimmee-ai bhand mangan vee-aahu.

From woman, man is born; within woman, man is conceived; to woman he is engaged and married.

bhandahu hovai dostee bhandahu chalai raahu.

Woman becomes his friend; through woman, the future generations come.

bhand mu-aa bhand bhaalee-ai bhand hovai banDhaan.

When his woman dies, he seeks another woman; to woman he is bound.

so ki-o mandaa aakhee-ai jit jameh raajaan.

So why call her bad? From her, kings are born.

bhandahu hee bhand oopjai bhandai baajh na ko-ay.

From woman, woman is born; without woman, there would be no one at all.

O Nanak, only the True Lord is without a woman.

naanak bhandai baahraa ayko sachaa so-ay.
