No disrespect intended. For example :

Spiritual People fit all except one of the symptoms of schizoaffective disorder

  • Delusions — having false, fixed beliefs, despite evidence to the contrary
  • Hallucinations, such as hearing voices or seeing things that aren't there
  • Symptoms of depression, such as feeling empty, sad or worthless
  • Periods of manic mood or a sudden increase in energy with behavior that's out of character
  • Impaired communication, such as only partially answering questions or giving answers that are completely unrelated
  • Impaired occupational, academic and social functioning

That is a limitation of western psychology. When you create a model and then try to fit things not accounted for in your model into it, you force those things to fit so they make sense to you. Western psychology is about the health of the ego. Spirituality is about going beyond ego.

Anyone can be "religious." It's easy: just follow the rules. "Spiritual" is a vague term, but to me it means someone who has experienced reality beyond the veil of maya. For such, the veil is thinner than with others. Such people sometimes exhibit behaviors others define as mentally ill.

Examples: Galileo, Kabir, Guru Nanak, Einstein, etc. Guru Amar Das Sahib: "O my insane mind, drink in the sublime essence of the Lord, and savor its taste." (ANG 430) Guru Ram Das " Poor Nanak has gone insane, longing for the Blessed Vision of the Lord’s Darshan." (757)
