On my recent visit to India I noticed that some of the older folks in the family were doing Jaap sahib and/or Japji Sahib while taking shower. I was shocked but to them it was normal. So is it appropriate to recite banis in the bathroom??

countless times guru ji have asked us to jap/remember Akal purakh with each and every single breath ... and we all breath while we take shower or even we go to loo .... it does not matter if its japji sahib, anand sahib or waheguru mantar or any other bani(they are all the same)... hope this answers your question ....

here are only very few examples from shiri guru granth sahib ji maharaj...

  • saans saans simarahu gobindh(With each and every breath, meditate in remembrance on the Lord of the Universe)

  • saas saas prabh thumehi dhiaavo(With each and every breath, may I meditate on You, O God)

  • tis prabh ko saas saas chithaaree(think of God with each and every breath)

  • man saas saas simarahu prabh oochae(O mind, with each and every breath, remember God)

  • gagaa gobidh gun ravahu saas saas jap neeth(GAGGA: Chant the Glorious Praises of the Lord of the Universe with each and every breath; meditate on Him forever)

  • har dhiaavahu saas giraas(Meditate on the Lord, with every breath and morsel of food)

  • saahi saahi thujh sanmalaa kadhae n visaaraeo(With each and every breath, I dwell upon You; I shall never forget You)

Recently I read an anecdote. Very much related to what you are looking for. It goes like this:

A person asks a priest if it is ok to smoke while praying. The priest says NO..Not at all.

The man goes away. Thinks and thinks hard and then comes back after some time.

He asks the priest again. I understood that it is not allowed to smoke while praying but can I pray while smoking.

:)

guru ji teaches us to remember,jap,contemplate.... god every single breath and there is another way he puts the same idea forward, is by saying the same thing with the time format .... for example

  • aath pehar har kae gun gaao(Twenty-four hours a day, sing the Glorious Praises of the Lord)

  • aath pehar har kae gun gaavai bhagat praem ras maathaa(Twenty-four hours a day, he sings the Glorious Praises of the Lord, absorbed in loving devotional worship)

  • aath pehar har kae gun gaavai simarai dheen dhaiala(One who sings the Glorious Praises of the Lord, twenty-four hours a day, and remembers the Lord in meditation, who is Kind to the poor)

and then guru ji says the same thing in yet another way...

  • oothath baithath sovath jaagath har dhiaaeeai sagal avaradhaa jeeo(While standing and sitting, while sleeping and while awake, meditate on the Lord, all your life)

  • oothath baithath sovath naam(While standing up, sitting down and sleeping, the Naam)

  • oothath baithath sovath jaagath sadhaa sadhaa har dhiaaeeai(Sitting down, standing up, sleeping and waking, forever and ever, meditate on the Lord)

and what would happen if anybody does this ....

  • saas saas har gaavai nanak satgur taak leeaa maera parada jeeo(With each and every breath, Nanak sings the Lord's Praises. The True Guru has covered my sins)
