Wjkk wjkf I’m a 14 year female who is not amridhari but I keep the hair on my head and don’t do my eyebrows. I also don’t shave anywhere on my body because I don’t feel the need to wear revealing clothing. The only hair I remove is the hair on my upper lip. Starting from second grade I was always taunted by other kids for having a “moustache” and was called a man. I always feel so uncomfortable when I let my upper lip hair grow out. Does this make me a bad sikh? I am willing to keep all hair on my body except for my upper lip. Even when I am home alone and there is hair on my upper lip, I feel uncomfortable and ugly. Does this mean that I will go to hell since I’m not following all rules of sikhi? I pray, am vegetarian, do good deeds and work hard in school but I always feel bad about removing my upper lip hair, however I can’t get myself to stop removing it! Please help, does this make me a bad sikh?

Guru Sahib not only blessed his Sikhs with the kesh but remember he is the creator of this universe. He has created you perfectly. All these ideas about what a girl or boy is supposed to look like or be like are all just social constructs - made up! Don't let others judge you, you are the daughter of the king of kings! The one that loves you so much. The one that feeds and provides shelter for the lowest of the low. That beautiful Guru is your father. It's ok since you are going through your teenage years, they are pretty shaky but I'm going to say that one of the reasons Guru Sahib instructed us to keep kesh was so we wouldn't have such fears or go through such abuse. As in - we don't have to worry about appeasing a particular person or society by looking a certain way, we were born to stand out. When you have kesh your basically saying only my Guru matters.

ਜਉ ਤਉ ਪ੍ਰੇਮ ਖੇਲਣ ਕਾ ਚਾਉ ॥ ja ta praym khaylann kaa chaa || If you desire to play this game of love with Me,

ਸਿਰੁ ਧਰਿ ਤਲੀ ਗਲੀ ਮੇਰੀ ਆਉ ॥ sir dhar talee galee mayree aaa || then step onto My Path with your head in hand.

ਇਤੁ ਮਾਰਗਿ ਪੈਰੁ ਧਰੀਜੈ ॥ eit maarag pair dhareejai || When you place your feet on this Path,

ਸਿਰੁ ਦੀਜੈ ਕਾਣਿ ਨ ਕੀਜੈ ॥੨੦॥ sir dheejai kaann n keejai ||20|| give Me your head, and do not pay any attention to public opinion. ||20||

However, I do know as I am a teenager myself, that these things are hard, especially in the society we live in. Just know that Guru Sahib will always love you no matter what you do - and I mean this. And I'm not an Amritdhari either or do I have my rehit set - I'm full of dirt. I'm not even close to being a good Sikh lol. But I just wanted to tell you what Guru Sahib said just so the truth is there :)

You are an adolescent, soon to be developing into a young lady with this comes hormonal and physiological changes of the body. I would keep close attention on how hair growth is reacting to this process. If you feel uncomfortable and you have spoken to your parents, then remove the hair. It is your choice and your comfort level.

Wjkk wjkf I'm your age aswell! Even I have the some similar problems to you. It's good that you keep your hair. For your upper lips, all I can say is that if you cannot find a way to stop removing the hairs then you could do some Simran (pray) and this should give you confidence.

I really don't feel that this makes you a bad Sikh. Your 14, still a child and as a teen there could be some things that make you uncomfortable. And that is totally okay. There are loads of Sikh women who are also feel the same as you right now.

However by keep on removing hair is not going to solve your problem of being uncomfortable. Hair is always gonna grow because it's natural and that's how Waheguru made us. I know what it feels like. Even yes sometimes I remove facial hair because I feel like it doesn't look right. By doing this we make ourselves more confident in the way we look. So I guess theres no real problem to this.

As of now your not an amritdhari and you don't need to worry about it. And if your gonna consider taking Amrit later in life then that is really good because hopefully at that time you would feel more confident in yourself and you will feel commitment into not removing any hairs.

For now all I can say is that this is not a big issue. Do some Simran and it will definitely help you!

Ask for some guidance at home if you still struggle but remember you are perfectly fine and it is okay feel uncomfortable with certain things about ourselves. Please don't care about what people think about you. You and I know that your beautiful :)

May Waheguru help you!!

The link is about a women and how she faced being buiiled about her facial hair then later accepting facial hair. This may help you, probably by confidence. It's up to you to watch the video.

:) HAVE A GOOD DAY BEAUTIFUL!

Guru Ji knows the hearts of all his Sikhs. There is no problem. Your Sikhi should never make you uncomfortable, but rather relaxed and confident.
