The answers to your questions, there is no issue at all for an Amritdhari Sikh in having a girlfriend or boyfriend. For partaking Amrit, learning Punjabi or even understanding Punjabi is not at all a necessity.

Had Punjabi been a pre-condition to partake Amrit then on the Baisakhi day of 1699, Guru Gobind Singh Ji would not have initiated non-Punjabis as the Panj Pyares.

Out of the five Panj Pyares, only one that is Bhai Daya Singh Ji was a Punjabi and rest all the four were non-Punjabis.

Bhai Dharam Singh Ji was a Hindi speaking from Hastinapur, District Meerut, Uttar Pradesh.

Bhai Himmat Singh Ji was a native of Odisha Province.

Bhai Mohkam Singh Ji was a Gujarati.

Bhai Sahib Singh Ji was a Kannadiga from Bidar, Karnataka Province.

So, foundations of the Khalsa Panth was laid on the non-Punjabis becoming Amritdharis.

Baba Jiwan Singh, who carried the head of Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji after Guru Ji’s execution from Delhi to Anandpur Sahib was a non-Punjabi born in Patna, Bihar. He was then given the name Rangreta Guru Ka Beta meaning the real son of the Guru.

Even Baba Banda Singh Bahadur, the greatest military commander in the entire Sikh history was a non-Punjabi. He was born to Hindu Parents in Poonch district of Jammu & Kashmir.

So, Punjabisation has nothing to do at all with Sikhism.

Trish, you belong to which nationality, are you male or female, and what are your other questions?

In relation to your question about taking Amrit, yes you can take Amrit without knowing how to speak Punjabi. Sikh means learner and we will continue to learn till the end whether we take Amrit or not. You can always start learning and continue to improve in your Punjabi as time goes on, besides there are many websites and apps that can help.

In Sikhism there should not be such a thing as dating. There is no purpose for it unless you are looking to get married and settle down. If you are for example a 16 years old why would you want to get a boyfriend. Why invest time, money and effort into a relationship you know is temporary. What is the reason you are with this person is it because they are attractive? Gurbani says

ਪਰ ਤ੍ਰਿਅ ਰੂਪੁ ਨ ਪੇਖੈ ਨੇਤ੍ਰ ॥ “With your eyes, do not even gaze (in a lustful manner) upon the beauty of another.” ~ Sukhmani Sahib.

Being in such a relationship you are moving away from your Guru. Your focus is on another person and trying to maintain a relationship that will most likely not last. Even if it is not about attraction and simply about finding company you should be free and independent. Especially if you are young, it is the time you enjoy life, study hard experience new things live your lives. There is so much to do, to see, to learn why put yourself in a situation where you are worrying about a person’s opinions about you or worrying about someone not replying to your texts. It is the best time for you to learn about Sikhi, to get closer with Guru Ji.

You mentioned your friends who are Amritdharis are in relationships. It is important to remember that not everything Amritdharis may do is right. You need to think for yourself, why is there a need to find someone to be in a relationship. Most often it is because of the influence of society, if everyone else is doing it why shouldn’t I? Being in boyfriend/girlfriend relations also these days lead to premarital sex or some sort of activities in those categories which is wrong. We should have respect for ourselves Guru Ji even gives us a reminder in the form of one of our 5K’s the Kachera, to preserve our dignity to remind ourselves to be smart and stay away from lust. At the end of the day however it is up to you, no one can stop an individual from making decisions. In Sikhism it is perfectly fine to be in relationships but why you wish to be in one is important. If you are looking for a long-term situation and are thinking of getting married then it makes sense to find someone and spend time with them. If however you are going out with someone because everyone else is doing it, or feel attracted to someone then it ... (more)
