I have started to get back into Sikhi after I cut my hair 2 years ago. My family raised me as a full fledge Sikh I used wear kirpans and khandas on my dastar as a kid but I never understood the concept of Sikhi at all and I blame my family for not explaining anything to me instead they forced me into Sikhi. When I was 15 , I cut my hair I had been acting like a atheist for 5 or 6 years and my kesh and dastar was not working out as it would get messed up in sports. My mom was sick of combing and tying my dastar and I used to see her miserable look as she called me over and if it didn't work out I skipped class and my mom and I had lots of fights my grades went down dramatically and I became failure. After I cut my hair I went through sort of a rebuild my grades went up and I quit being atheist (but not a believer in Sikhi) also I got back a good relationship with my mother back. Last year though I went through a tough time and I got very depressed , I started listening to daily hukumnamas after rehrass sahib on Tv and it helped alot it continued like this for weeks later I found myslef listening to rehrass sahib and in a matter of 3 months I memorised it. Now another year later now I have started to realize why we came here and about birth death cycle etc. , I learned about our Gurus amazing stories and the power of seva and praying. I realized now that I made such a mistake by leaving Sikhi but than I also realized that had I not cut my hair and not started over I still would have been a atheist right now. I want to become a Singh again after I graduate school and I wanted to know what I can do to not let the past happen again , I have a problem with very long hair is their anyway I can shorten it using a laser and than stop cutting my hair for good?

Focus first on your mind. When you meet Guru’s Sikhs who have followed the path, when you are inspired and fall in love with Sikhi, you will be able to follow the Rehat. Caring for your hair will become a blessing and sewa. Clean the mind with Gurbani. Everyone’s mind needs cleaning. This whole life is about the mind. So focus on the things you have been doing- listening to daily Hukamnamas and Rehras. Do sewa, listen to kathas and kirtan and prayers. Have you heard kathas about Bhai Taru Singh? i agree that Rehat is important and i didn't say it wasn't. but for someone struggling in their Sikhi, I think starting point varies for different people. And all the Gurmukhs I have spoken to who are at higher spiritual levels have been encouraging of people working on mind, even if they...

are unable to keep Rehat yet. I am making a point of trying to be encouraging and understanding that everyone has a different journey rather than being judgemental and negative.

o.k do agree with u but nobody is being judgmental and negative here, everyone in this thread have expressed their own views, lets not take constructive criticism to be negative.

" I have a problem with very long hair is their anyway I can shorten it using a laser and than stop cutting my hair for good"

Your above words do prove it that Sikhi is a burden for you, not only you but today most of the Sikhs in the age category of 20 to 60, males and females have the same issue of keeping long hairs.

Most of the Punjabi Sikhs today do go to the Gurdwaras regularly they even recite Nitnem but when it comes to keeping the Rehat, they are unable to maintain their outer identity.

I don't wish to cut hair , I find peace from praying and I have heard cutting hair gets in your path. So I don't want to find myself in a situation like before. If our outer identity matters so much than wouldn't it and our physical body come with us to the next world? Only our prayers come with us

no doubt prayers are important but outer identity too is imp. what if a Cop is good in discharging his duties but refuses to wear the Cops' dress, will he be eligible to be called a Cop, the answer is No, similarly no matter how good u r as a person but outer identity too is imp to be called a Sikh

OMG! you want to shorten your hairs using laser, and you say that you want to get back into the Sikh fold. Imagine if all the Sikhs start using the laser techniques, is it real Sikhism?

Most of the Sikhs living in Punjab and even those Punjabi Sikhs residing in Amrika, Kaneda te Ingland have been listening to great Sikh stories since childhood be it of Bhai Taru Singh Ji, Baba Banda Singh Bahadur Ji, Hari Singh Nalwa Ji, Jassa Singh Ramgarghia Ji, and other Sikh warriors. In each and every Punjabi Sikh household, parents do take their children regularly to the Gurdwaras where they are taught about doing Sewa and cleaning one's own mind listening to Gurbani but the biggest issue still remains the same that of keeping untrimmed bodily hairs.

It's a truth that Punjabi Sikhs have made a mockery of their own faith. It's high time to hand over the reigns of Sikhism to the non-Punjabi Sikhs. Rather than Amritsar, Espanola must be declared as the new Vatican of the Sikhs.

I can't deny that people have made Sikhi look bad. I'm no exception but the length of you hair shouldn't affect your attachment to bani

not all people have made Sikhi look bad but Punjabi Sikhs certainly have taken it to a new low. There r sizable number of Hindus who recite Bani, go regularly to the Gurdwaras and do Sewa too but they r clean shaven and trimmers, can they be called GurSikhs. NO.

i wud have appreciated had u humbly accepted that nothing is going right for the Punjabi Sikhs and urgently reforms r needed to bring them to the Sikhi fold.

completely agree with the top most comment that Espanola must be declared as the new Vatican of the Sikhs and better wud be if Mr. Gurubachan Singh Khalsa is appointed as the Chief Jathedar of the Espanola Gurdwara.
