Very nice question. Beautiful! Thank you for asking because it helped me to review what I have been learning. I will try my very best to explain, bhul chuk maaf karni.

Giani Sant Singh Ji Maskeen explains this very well in his (English translated book) Shabad Guru Surat Dhan Chela. I’m going to provide you with a brief summary of his explanation and some quotes from the English translation of the book. He explains that “sound is of two types- anhat: sound produced with striking of two things” the example of metal sttiking metal or clapping hands are given here.

The second type is “anahad: this sound is spreading everywhere and the whole universe came into existence from this sound. There is a lot of mention of this anahad sound in Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji: Ang 922 Binavant Nanak Gur charan laagae vaaje anhad toorae Prays Nanak, touching the Guru’s Feet, the unstruck sound current of the celestial bulges vibrates and resounds.” (page 13-14 Shabad Guru Surat Dhan Chela).

So the sound of God’s voice is called the celestial sound or unstruck sound current (Anahad Naad). The whole world came into existence from this sound, and it continues to ring in our body. Because we cannot hear this with our physical senses, we must access our spiritual senses to be able to hear it. The Guru Granth Sahib Ji guides us to mediate on God’s name (do Naam Japna). When you start out loud, you will listen to your own voice. Absorb into it fully. Slowly the jaap will happen on its own in your mind and your thoughts will go away. Our thoughts are actually maya and are distractions keeping us from being able to hear God’s voice and merge with God. So we need to do more Naam Japna. Then we will be able to hear the Anahad Naad.
